The Folding Up
1 إِذَا ٱلشَّمۡسُ كُوِّرَتۡidhāإذاإِذَاWhenl-shamsuالشمسٱلشَّمْسُthe sunkuwwiratكورتكُوِّرَتْis wrapped up,When the sun is wrapped up in darkness,When the sun is overthrown,When the sun is wrapped up [in darkness]When the sun (with its spacious light) is folded up;
2 وَإِذَا ٱلنُّجُومُ ٱنكَدَرَتۡwa-idhāوإذاوَإِذَاAnd whenl-nujūmuالنجومٱلنُّجُومُthe starsinkadaratانكدرتٱنكَدَرَتْfall, losing their lusterand when the stars fall down,And when the stars fall,And when the stars fall, dispersing,When the stars fall, losing their lustre;
3 وَإِذَا ٱلۡجِبَالُ سُيِّرَتۡwa-idhāوإذاوَإِذَاAnd whenl-jibāluالجبالٱلْجِبَالُthe mountainssuyyiratسيرتسُيِّرَتْare moved away,and when the mountains are set in motion,And when the hills are moved,And when the mountains are removedWhen the mountains vanish (like a mirage);
4 وَإِذَا ٱلۡعِشَارُ عُطِّلَتۡwa-idhāوإذاوَإِذَاAnd whenl-ʿishāruالعشارٱلْعِشَارُthe full-term she-camelsʿuṭṭilatعطلتعُطِّلَتْ(are) left untended;And when the camels big with young are abandoned,and when pregnant camels[1] are left unattended,And when full-term she-camels[1865] are neglectedWhen the she-camels, ten months with young, are left untended;
5 وَإِذَا ٱلۡوُحُوشُ حُشِرَتۡwa-idhāوإذاوَإِذَاAnd whenl-wuḥūshuالوحوشٱلْوُحُوشُthe wild beastsḥushiratحشرتحُشِرَتْare gathered,And when the wild beasts are herded together,and when wild beasts are gathered,And when the wild beasts are gatheredWhen the wild beasts are herded together (in the human habitations);
6 وَإِذَا ٱلۡبِحَارُ سُجِّرَتۡwa-idhāوإذاوَإِذَاAnd whenl-biḥāruالبحارٱلْبِحَارُthe seassujjiratسجرتسُجِّرَتْare made to overflow,And when the seas rise,and when the seas are set on fire,And when the seas are filled with flame[1866]When the oceans boil over with a swell;
7 وَإِذَا ٱلنُّفُوسُ زُوِّجَتۡwa-idhāوإذاوَإِذَاAnd whenl-nufūsuالنفوسٱلنُّفُوسُthe soulszuwwijatزوجتزُوِّجَتْare paired,And when souls are reunited,and when the souls are sorted[2],And when the souls are paired[1867]When the souls are sorted out, (being joined, like with like);
8 وَإِذَا ٱلۡمَوۡءُۥدَةُ سُئِلَتۡwa-idhāوإذاوَإِذَاAnd whenl-mawūdatuالموءودةٱلْمَوْءُۥدَةُthe female infant buried alivesu-ilatسئلتسُئِلَتْis askedAnd when the girl-child that was buried alive is askedand when the baby girl buried alive[3] is asked,And when the girl [who was] buried alive is askedWhen the female (infant), buried alive, is questioned -
9 بِأَيِّ ذَنۢبٖ قُتِلَتۡbi-ayyiبأيبِأَىِّFor whatdhanbinذنبذَنۢبٍsinqutilatقتلتقُتِلَتْshe was killed.For what sin she was slain,for what crime she was killed,For what sin she was killedFor what crime she was killed;
10 وَإِذَا ٱلصُّحُفُ نُشِرَتۡwa-idhāوإذاوَإِذَاAnd whenl-ṣuḥufuالصحفٱلصُّحُفُthe pagesnushiratنشرتنُشِرَتْare laid open,And when the pages are laid open,and when records of deeds are spread open,And when the pages[1868] are spread [i.e., made public]When the scrolls are laid open;
11 وَإِذَا ٱلسَّمَآءُ كُشِطَتۡwa-idhāوإذاوَإِذَاAnd whenl-samāuالسماءٱلسَّمَآءُthe skykushiṭatكشطتكُشِطَتْis stripped away,And when the sky is torn away,and when the sky is stripped away[4],And when the sky is stripped awayWhen the world on High is unveiled;
12 وَإِذَا ٱلۡجَحِيمُ سُعِّرَتۡwa-idhāوإذاوَإِذَاAnd whenl-jaḥīmuالجحيمٱلْجَحِيمُthe Hellfiresuʿʿiratسعرتسُعِّرَتْis set ablaze,And when hell is lighted,and when the Blazing Fire is flared up,And when Hellfire is set ablazeWhen the Blazing Fire is kindled to fierce heat;
13 وَإِذَا ٱلۡجَنَّةُ أُزۡلِفَتۡwa-idhāوإذاوَإِذَاAnd whenl-janatuالجنةٱلْجَنَّةُParadiseuz'lifatأزلفتأُزْلِفَتْis brought near,And when the Garden is brought nigh,and when Paradise is brought near –And when Paradise is brought near,And when the Garden is brought near;-
14 عَلِمَتۡ نَفۡسٞ مَّآ أَحۡضَرَتۡʿalimatعلمتعَلِمَتْWill knownafsunنفسنَفْسٌa soulmāمامَّآwhataḥḍaratأحضرتأَحْضَرَتْit has brought.(Then) every soul will know what it hath made ready.then every soul will know what it has brought about[5].A soul will [then] know what it has brought [with it].[1869](Then) shall each soul know what it has put forward.
15 فَلَآ أُقۡسِمُ بِٱلۡخُنَّسِfalāفلافَلَآBut nay!uq'simuأقسمأُقْسِمُI swearbil-khunasiبالخنسبِٱلْخُنَّسِby the retreating planets,Oh, but I call to witness the planets,I swear by the receding stars,So I swear by the retreating stars -So verily I call to witness the planets - that recede,
16 ٱلۡجَوَارِ ٱلۡكُنَّسِal-jawāriالجوارٱلْجَوَارِThose that runl-kunasiالكنسٱلْكُنَّسِ(and) disappear,The stars which rise and set,that rise and hide[6],Those that run [their courses] and disappear [i.e., set]Go straight, or hide;
17 وَٱلَّيۡلِ إِذَا عَسۡعَسَwa-al-layliوالليلوَٱلَّيْلِAnd the nightidhāإذاإِذَاwhenʿasʿasaعسعسعَسْعَسَit departs,And the close of night,and by the night as it departs,And by the night as it closes in[1870]And the Night as it dissipates;
18 وَٱلصُّبۡحِ إِذَا تَنَفَّسَwal-ṣub'ḥiوالصبحوَٱلصُّبْحِAnd the dawnidhāإذاإِذَاwhentanaffasaتنفستَنَفَّسَit breathesAnd the breath of morningand by the day as it breaks –And by the dawn when it breathes [i.e., stirs]And the Dawn as it breathes away the darkness;-
19 إِنَّهُۥ لَقَوۡلُ رَسُولٖ كَرِيمٖinnahuإنهإِنَّهُۥIndeed, itlaqawluلقوللَقَوْلُ(is) surely a wordrasūlinرسولرَسُولٍ(of) a Messengerkarīminكريمكَرِيمٍnoble,That this is in truth the word of an honoured messenger,Indeed, this [Qur’an] is a word conveyed by a noble angel-messenger.[That] indeed, it [i.e., the Qur’ān] is a word [conveyed by] a noble messenger [i.e., Gabriel]Verily this is the word of a most honourable Messenger,
20 ذِي قُوَّةٍ عِندَ ذِي ٱلۡعَرۡشِ مَكِينٖdhīذيذِىPossessor ofquwwatinقوةقُوَّةٍpower,ʿindaعندعِندَwithdhīذيذِى(the) Owner ofl-ʿarshiالعرشٱلْعَرْشِthe Thronemakīninمكينمَكِينٍsecure,Mighty, established in the presence of the Lord of the Throne,extremely powerful, highly revered by the Lord of the Throne,[Who is] possessed of power and with the Owner of the Throne, secure [in position],Endued with Power, with rank before the Lord of the Throne,
21 مُّطَاعٖ ثَمَّ أَمِينٖmuṭāʿinمطاعمُّطَاعٍOne to be obeyedthammaثمثَمَّandamīninأمينأَمِينٍtrustworthy,(One) to be obeyed, and trustworthy;obeyed there [by other angels] and trustworthy.Obeyed there [in the heavens] and trustworthy.With authority there, (and) faithful to his trust.
22 وَمَا صَاحِبُكُم بِمَجۡنُونٖwamāوماوَمَاAnd notṣāḥibukumصاحبكمصَاحِبُكُم(is) your companionbimajnūninبمجنونبِمَجْنُونٍmad.And your comrade is not mad.Your fellow [i.e., the Prophet] is not a madman.And your companion [i.e., Prophet Muḥammad (ﷺ) ] is not [at all] mad.[1871]And (O people!) your companion is not one possessed;
23 وَلَقَدۡ رَءَاهُ بِٱلۡأُفُقِ ٱلۡمُبِينِwalaqadولقدوَلَقَدْAnd certainlyraāhuرآهرَءَاهُhe saw himbil-ufuqiبالأفقبِٱلْأُفُقِin the horizonl-mubīniالمبينٱلْمُبِينِthe clear.Surely he beheld Him on the clear horizon.He indeed saw him [i.e., Gabriel] on the clear horizon[7].And he has already seen him [i.e., Gabriel] in the clear horizon.[1872]And without doubt he saw him in the clear horizon.
24 وَمَا هُوَ عَلَى ٱلۡغَيۡبِ بِضَنِينٖwamāوماوَمَاAnd nothuwaهوهُوَhe (is)ʿalāعلىعَلَىonl-ghaybiالغيبٱلْغَيْبِthe unseenbiḍanīninبضنينبِضَنِينٍa withholder.And he is not avid of the Unseen.He does not withhold [knowledge of] the unseen[8].And he [i.e., Muḥammad (ﷺ)] is not a withholder of [knowledge of] the unseen.[1873]Neither doth he withhold grudgingly a knowledge of the Unseen.
25 وَمَا هُوَ بِقَوۡلِ شَيۡطَٰنٖ رَّجِيمٖwamāوماوَمَاAnd nothuwaهوهُوَitbiqawliبقولبِقَوْلِ(is the) wordshayṭāninشيطانشَيْطَٰنٍ(of) Shaitaanrajīminرجيمرَّجِيمٍaccursed.Nor is this the utterance of a devil worthy to be stoned.This [Qur’an] is not the word of an accursed devil.And it [i.e., the Qur’ān] is not the word of a devil, expelled [from the heavens].Nor is it the word of an evil spirit accursed.
26 فَأَيۡنَ تَذۡهَبُونَfa-aynaفأينفَأَيْنَSo wheretadhhabūnaتذهبونتَذْهَبُونَare you going?Whither then go ye?So which way are you going[9]?So where are you going?[1874]When whither go ye?
27 إِنۡ هُوَ إِلَّا ذِكۡرٞ لِّلۡعَٰلَمِينَinإنإِنْNothuwaهوهُوَitillāإلاإِلَّا(is) exceptdhik'runذكرذِكْرٌa reminderlil'ʿālamīnaللعالمينلِّلْعَٰلَمِينَto the worlds,This is naught else than a reminder unto creation,It is but a reminder to the worlds,It is not except a reminder to the worldsVerily this is no less than a Message to (all) the Worlds:
28 لِمَن شَآءَ مِنكُمۡ أَن يَسۡتَقِيمَlimanلمنلِمَنFor whoevershāaشاءشَآءَwillsminkumمنكممِنكُمْamong youanأنأَنtoyastaqīmaيستقيميَسْتَقِيمَtake a straight way.Unto whomsoever of you willeth to walk straight.for those among you who wish to take the straight path.For whoever wills among you to take a right course.(With profit) to whoever among you wills to go straight:
29 وَمَا تَشَآءُونَ إِلَّآ أَن يَشَآءَ ٱللَّهُ رَبُّ ٱلۡعَٰلَمِينَwamāوماوَمَاAnd nottashāūnaتشاءونتَشَآءُونَyou willillāإلاإِلَّآexceptanأنأَنthatyashāaيشاءيَشَآءَwillsl-lahuاللهٱللَّهُAllah,rabbuربرَبُّLordl-ʿālamīnaالعالمينٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ(of) the worlds.And ye will not, unless (it be) that Allah willeth, the Lord of Creation.But you cannot wish except by the Will of Allah, the Lord of the worlds.And you do not will except that Allāh wills - Lord of the worlds.But ye shall not will except as Allah wills,- the Cherisher of the Worlds.
1 إِذَا الشَّمْسُ كُوِّرَتْ
2 وَإِذَا النُّجُومُ انكَدَرَتْ
3 وَإِذَا الْجِبَالُ سُيِّرَتْ
4 وَإِذَا الْعِشَارُ عُطِّلَتْ
5 وَإِذَا الْوُحُوشُ حُشِرَتْ
6 وَإِذَا الْبِحَارُ سُجِّرَتْ
7 وَإِذَا النُّفُوسُ زُوِّجَتْ
8 وَإِذَا الْمَوْءُودَةُ سُئِلَتْ
9 بِأَيِّ ذَنبٍ قُتِلَتْ
10 وَإِذَا الصُّحُفُ نُشِرَتْ
11 وَإِذَا السَّمَاءُ كُشِطَتْ
12 وَإِذَا الْجَحِيمُ سُعِّرَتْ
13 وَإِذَا الْجَنَّةُ أُزْلِفَتْ
14 عَلِمَتْ نَفْسٌ مَّا أَحْضَرَتْ
15 فَلَا أُقْسِمُ بِالْخُنَّسِ
16 الْجَوَارِ الْكُنَّسِ
17 وَاللَّيْلِ إِذَا عَسْعَسَ
18 وَالصُّبْحِ إِذَا تَنَفَّسَ
19 إِنَّهُ لَقَوْلُ رَسُولٍ كَرِيمٍ
20 ذِي قُوَّةٍ عِندَ ذِي الْعَرْشِ مَكِينٍ
21 مُّطَاعٍ ثَمَّ أَمِينٍ
22 وَمَا صَاحِبُكُم بِمَجْنُونٍ
23 وَلَقَدْ رَآهُ بِالْأُفُقِ الْمُبِينِ
24 وَمَا هُوَ عَلَى الْغَيْبِ بِضَنِينٍ
25 وَمَا هُوَ بِقَوْلِ شَيْطَانٍ رَّجِيمٍ
26 فَأَيْنَ تَذْهَبُونَ
27 إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا ذِكْرٌ لِّلْعَالَمِينَ
28 لِمَن شَاءَ مِنكُمْ أَن يَسْتَقِيمَ
29 وَمَا تَشَاءُونَ إِلَّا أَن يَشَاءَ اللَّهُ رَبُّ الْعَالَمِينَ
1 إِذَا ٱلشَّمْسُ كُوِّرَتْidhāإذاإِذَاWhenl-shamsuالشمسٱلشَّمْسُthe sunkuwwiratكورتكُوِّرَتْis wrapped up,When the sun is wrapped up in darkness,When the sun is overthrown,When the sun is wrapped up [in darkness]When the sun (with its spacious light) is folded up;

10 وَإِذَا ٱلصُّحُفُ نُشِرَتْwa-idhāوإذاوَإِذَاAnd whenl-ṣuḥufuالصحفٱلصُّحُفُthe pagesnushiratنشرتنُشِرَتْare laid open,And when the pages are laid open,and when records of deeds are spread open,And when the pages[1868] are spread [i.e., made public]When the scrolls are laid open;
11 وَإِذَا ٱلسَّمَآءُ كُشِطَتْwa-idhāوإذاوَإِذَاAnd whenl-samāuالسماءٱلسَّمَآءُthe skykushiṭatكشطتكُشِطَتْis stripped away,And when the sky is torn away,and when the sky is stripped away[4],And when the sky is stripped awayWhen the world on High is unveiled;

14 عَلِمَتْ نَفْسَ مَّآ أَحْضَرَتْʿalimatعلمتعَلِمَتْWill knownafsunنفسنَفْسٌa soulmāمامَّآwhataḥḍaratأحضرتأَحْضَرَتْit has brought.(Then) every soul will know what it hath made ready.then every soul will know what it has brought about[5].A soul will [then] know what it has brought [with it].[1869](Then) shall each soul know what it has put forward.
15 فَلَآ أُقْسِمُ بِٱلْخُنَّسِfalāفلافَلَآBut nay!uq'simuأقسمأُقْسِمُI swearbil-khunasiبالخنسبِٱلْخُنَّسِby the retreating planets,Oh, but I call to witness the planets,I swear by the receding stars,So I swear by the retreating stars -So verily I call to witness the planets - that recede,

17 وَٱلَّيْلِ إِذَا عَسْعَسَwa-al-layliوالليلوَٱلَّيْلِAnd the nightidhāإذاإِذَاwhenʿasʿasaعسعسعَسْعَسَit departs,And the close of night,and by the night as it departs,And by the night as it closes in[1870]And the Night as it dissipates;

19 إِنَّهُ لَقَوْلُ رَسُولٖ كَرِيمٖinnahuإنهإِنَّهُIndeed, itlaqawluلقوللَقَوْلُ(is) surely a wordrasūlinرسولرَسُولٍ(of) a Messengerkarīminكريمكَرِيمٍnoble,That this is in truth the word of an honoured messenger,Indeed, this [Qur’an] is a word conveyed by a noble angel-messenger.[That] indeed, it [i.e., the Qur’ān] is a word [conveyed by] a noble messenger [i.e., Gabriel]Verily this is the word of a most honourable Messenger,

23 وَلَقَدْ رَءَاهُ بِٱلْأُفُقِ ٱلْمُبِينِwalaqadولقدوَلَقَدْAnd certainlyraāhuرآهرَءَاهُhe saw himbil-ufuqiبالأفقبِٱلْأُفُقِin the horizonl-mubīniالمبينٱلْمُبِينِthe clear.Surely he beheld Him on the clear horizon.He indeed saw him [i.e., Gabriel] on the clear horizon[7].And he has already seen him [i.e., Gabriel] in the clear horizon.[1872]And without doubt he saw him in the clear horizon.
24 وَمَا هُوَ عَلَى ٱلْغَيْبِ بِضَنِينٖwamāوماوَمَاAnd nothuwaهوهُوَhe (is)ʿalāعلىعَلَىonl-ghaybiالغيبٱلْغَيْبِthe unseenbiḍanīninبضنينبِضَنِينٍa withholder.And he is not avid of the Unseen.He does not withhold [knowledge of] the unseen[8].And he [i.e., Muḥammad (ﷺ)] is not a withholder of [knowledge of] the unseen.[1873]Neither doth he withhold grudgingly a knowledge of the Unseen.
25 وَمَا هُوَ بِقَوْلِ شَيْطَٰنٖ رَّجِيمٖwamāوماوَمَاAnd nothuwaهوهُوَitbiqawliبقولبِقَوْلِ(is the) wordshayṭāninشيطانشَيْطَٰنٍ(of) Shaitaanrajīminرجيمرَّجِيمٍaccursed.Nor is this the utterance of a devil worthy to be stoned.This [Qur’an] is not the word of an accursed devil.And it [i.e., the Qur’ān] is not the word of a devil, expelled [from the heavens].Nor is it the word of an evil spirit accursed.
26 فَأَيْنَ تَذْهَبُونَfa-aynaفأينفَأَيْنَSo wheretadhhabūnaتذهبونتَذْهَبُونَare you going?Whither then go ye?So which way are you going[9]?So where are you going?[1874]When whither go ye?
27 إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا ذِكْرَ لِّلْعَٰلَمِينَinإنإِنْNothuwaهوهُوَitillāإلاإِلَّا(is) exceptdhik'runذكرذِكْرٌa reminderlil'ʿālamīnaللعالمينلِّلْعَٰلَمِينَto the worlds,This is naught else than a reminder unto creation,It is but a reminder to the worlds,It is not except a reminder to the worldsVerily this is no less than a Message to (all) the Worlds:
28 لِمَن شَآءَ مِنكُمْ أَن يَسْتَقِيمَlimanلمنلِمَنFor whoevershāaشاءشَآءَwillsminkumمنكممِنكُمْamong youanأنأَنtoyastaqīmaيستقيميَسْتَقِيمَtake a straight way.Unto whomsoever of you willeth to walk straight.for those among you who wish to take the straight path.For whoever wills among you to take a right course.(With profit) to whoever among you wills to go straight:
29 وَمَا تَشَآءُونَ إِلَّآ أَن يَشَآءَ ٱللَّهُ رَبُّ ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَwamāوماوَمَاAnd nottashāūnaتشاءونتَشَآءُونَyou willillāإلاإِلَّآexceptanأنأَنthatyashāaيشاءيَشَآءَwillsl-lahuاللهٱللَّهُAllah,rabbuربرَبُّLordl-ʿālamīnaالعالمينٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ(of) the worlds.And ye will not, unless (it be) that Allah willeth, the Lord of Creation.But you cannot wish except by the Will of Allah, the Lord of the worlds.And you do not will except that Allāh wills - Lord of the worlds.But ye shall not will except as Allah wills,- the Cherisher of the Worlds.

إِذَا الشَّمْسُ كُوِّرَتْ ١ وَإِذَا النُّجُومُ انكَدَرَتْ ٢ وَإِذَا الْجِبَالُ
سُيِّرَتْ ٣ وَإِذَا الْعِشَارُ عُطِّلَتْ ٤ وَإِذَا الْوُحُوشُ حُشِرَتْ
٥ وَإِذَا الْبِحَارُ سُجِّرَتْ ٦ وَإِذَا النُّفُوسُ زُوِّجَتْ ٧ وَإِذَا
الْمَوْءُودَةُ سُئِلَتْ ٨ بِأَيِّ ذَنبٍ قُتِلَتْ ٩ وَإِذَا الصُّحُفُ نُشِرَتْ
١٠ وَإِذَا السَّمَاءُ كُشِطَتْ ١١ وَإِذَا الْجَحِيمُ سُعِّرَتْ ١٢ وَإِذَا الْجَنَّةُ
أُزْلِفَتْ ١٣ عَلِمَتْ نَفْسٌ مَّا أَحْضَرَتْ ١٤ فَلَا أُقْسِمُ بِالْخُنَّسِ ١٥
الْجَوَارِ الْكُنَّسِ ١٦ وَاللَّيْلِ إِذَا عَسْعَسَ ١٧ وَالصُّبْحِ إِذَا تَنَفَّسَ ١٨
إِنَّهُ لَقَوْلُ رَسُولٍ كَرِيمٍ ١٩ ذِي قُوَّةٍ عِندَ ذِي الْعَرْشِ مَكِينٍ ٢٠ مُّطَاعٍ
ثَمَّ أَمِينٍ ٢١ وَمَا صَاحِبُكُم بِمَجْنُونٍ ٢٢ وَلَقَدْ رَآهُ بِالْأُفُقِ الْمُبِينِ
٢٣ وَمَا هُوَ عَلَى الْغَيْبِ بِضَنِينٍ ٢٤ وَمَا هُوَ بِقَوْلِ شَيْطَانٍ رَّجِيمٍ ٢٥
فَأَيْنَ تَذْهَبُونَ ٢٦ إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا ذِكْرٌ لِّلْعَالَمِينَ ٢٧ لِمَن شَاءَ مِنكُمْ أَن
يَسْتَقِيمَ ٢٨ وَمَا تَشَاءُونَ إِلَّا أَن يَشَاءَ اللَّهُ رَبُّ الْعَالَمِينَ ٢٩
إِذَا ٱلشَّمْسُ كُوِّرَتْ ۝١ وَإِذَا ٱلنُّجُومُ ٱنكَدَرَتْ ۝٢ وَإِذَا ٱلْجِبَالُ

أُزْلِفَتْ ۝١٣ عَلِمَتْ نَفْسَ مَّآ أَحْضَرَتْ ۝١٤ فَلَآ أُقْسِمُ بِٱلْخُنَّسِ ۝١٥
ٱلْجَوَارِ ٱلْكُنَّسِ ۝١٦ وَٱلَّيْلِ إِذَا عَسْعَسَ ۝١٧ وَٱلصُّبْحِ إِذَا تَنَفَّسَ ۝١٨
