The Pen
| 1 | نٓۚ وَٱلۡقَلَمِ وَمَا يَسۡطُرُونَnoonننٓNun.wal-qalamiوالقلموَٱلْقَلَمِBy the penwamāوماوَمَاand whatyasṭurūnaيسطرونيَسْطُرُونَthey write,Nun. By the pen and that which they write (therewith),Nūn[1]. By the pen and what they [i.e., the angels] write [in the Records of deeds],Nūn.[1724] By the pen and what they inscribe,Nun. By the Pen and the (Record) which (men) write,- |
| 2 | مَآ أَنتَ بِنِعۡمَةِ رَبِّكَ بِمَجۡنُونٖmāمامَآNotantaأنتأَنتَyou (are),biniʿ'matiبنعمةبِنِعْمَةِby (the) Gracerabbikaربكرَبِّكَ(of) your Lord,bimajnūninبمجنونبِمَجْنُونٍa madman.Thou art not, for thy Lord's favour unto thee, a madman.By the grace of your Lord [O Prophet], you are not a madman.You are not, [O Muḥammad], by the favor of your Lord, a madman.Thou art not, by the Grace of thy Lord, mad or possessed. |
| 3 | وَإِنَّ لَكَ لَأَجۡرًا غَيۡرَ مَمۡنُونٖwa-innaوإنوَإِنَّAnd indeed,lakaلكلَكَfor youla-ajranلأجرالَأَجْرًاsurely (is) a rewardghayraغيرغَيْرَwithoutmamnūninممنونمَمْنُونٍend.And lo! thine verily will be a reward unfailing.You will surely have a never-ending reward.And indeed, for you is a reward uninterrupted.Nay, verily for thee is a Reward unfailing: |
| 4 | وَإِنَّكَ لَعَلَىٰ خُلُقٍ عَظِيمٖwa-innakaوإنكوَإِنَّكَAnd indeed, youlaʿalāلعلىلَعَلَىٰsurely (are)khuluqinخلقخُلُقٍ(of) a moral characterʿaẓīminعظيمعَظِيمٍgreat.And lo! thou art of a tremendous nature.Indeed, you are of a great moral character.And indeed, you are of a great moral character.And thou (standest) on an exalted standard of character. |
| 5 | فَسَتُبۡصِرُ وَيُبۡصِرُونَfasatub'ṣiruفستبصرفَسَتُبْصِرُSo you will seewayub'ṣirūnaويبصرونوَيُبْصِرُونَand they will see,And thou wilt see and they will seeSoon you will see and they will see,So you will see and they will seeSoon wilt thou see, and they will see, |
| 6 | بِأَييِّكُمُ ٱلۡمَفۡتُونُbi-ayyikumuبأييكمبِأَييِّكُمُWhich of youl-maftūnuالمفتونٱلْمَفْتُونُ(is) the afflicted one.Which of you is the afflicted [by a devil].Which of you is the demented.which of you is afflicted with madness.Which of you is afflicted with madness. |
| 7 | إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ أَعۡلَمُ بِمَن ضَلَّ عَن سَبِيلِهِۦ وَهُوَ أَعۡلَمُ بِٱلۡمُهۡتَدِينَinnaإنإِنَّIndeed,rabbakaربكرَبَّكَyour Lord,huwaهوهُوَHeaʿlamuأعلمأَعْلَمُ(is) most knowingbimanبمنبِمَنof (he) whoḍallaضلضَلَّhas strayedʿanعنعَنfromsabīlihiسبيلهسَبِيلِهِۦHis way,wahuwaوهووَهُوَand Heaʿlamuأعلمأَعْلَمُ(is) most knowingbil-muh'tadīnaبالمهتدينبِٱلْمُهْتَدِينَof the guided ones.Lo! thy Lord is Best Aware of him who strayeth from His way, and He is Best Aware of those who walk aright.Indeed, your Lord alone knows best who has strayed from His way and those who are rightly guided.Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who has gone astray from His way, and He is most knowing of the [rightly] guided.Verily it is thy Lord that knoweth best, which (among men) hath strayed from His Path: and He knoweth best those who receive (true) Guidance. |
| 8 | فَلَا تُطِعِ ٱلۡمُكَذِّبِينَfalāفلافَلَاSo (do) nottuṭiʿiتطعتُطِعِobeyl-mukadhibīnaالمكذبينٱلْمُكَذِّبِينَthe deniers.Therefor obey not thou the rejectersSo do not obey the deniers.Then do not obey the deniers.So hearken not to those who deny (the Truth). |
| 9 | وَدُّواْ لَوۡ تُدۡهِنُ فَيُدۡهِنُونَwaddūودواوَدُّواْThey wishlawلولَوْthattud'hinuتدهنتُدْهِنُyou should compromise,fayud'hinūnaفيدهنونفَيُدْهِنُونَso they would compromise.Who would have had thee compromise, that they may compromise.They wish that you would compromise so they would too compromise.They wish that you would soften [in your position], so they would soften [toward you].Their desire is that thou shouldst be pliant: so would they be pliant. |
| 10 | وَلَا تُطِعۡ كُلَّ حَلَّافٖ مَّهِينٍwalāولاوَلَاAnd (do) nottuṭiʿتطعتُطِعْobeykullaكلكُلَّeveryḥallāfinحلافحَلَّافٍhabitual swearermahīninمهينمَّهِينٍworthless,Neither obey thou each feeble oath-monger,And do not obey every disgraceful swearer,And do not obey every worthless habitual swearerHeed not the type of despicable men,- ready with oaths, |
| 11 | هَمَّازٖ مَّشَّآءِۭ بِنَمِيمٖhammāzinهمازهَمَّازٍDefamermashāinمشاءمَّشَّآءٍۭgoing aboutbinamīminبنميمبِنَمِيمٍwith malicious gossip,Detracter, spreader abroad of slanders,backbiter, gossip-monger,[And] scorner, going about with malicious gossip -A slanderer, going about with calumnies, |
| 12 | مَّنَّاعٖ لِّلۡخَيۡرِ مُعۡتَدٍ أَثِيمٍmannāʿinمناعمَّنَّاعٍA preventer,lil'khayriللخيرلِّلْخَيْرِof (the) good,muʿ'tadinمعتدمُعْتَدٍtransgressor,athīminأثيمأَثِيمٍsinful,Hinderer of the good, transgressor, malefactorwithholder of good, transgressor, sinful,A preventer of good, transgressing and sinful,(Habitually) hindering (all) good, transgressing beyond bounds, deep in sin, |
| 13 | عُتُلِّۭ بَعۡدَ ذَٰلِكَ زَنِيمٍʿutullinعتلعُتُلٍّۭCruel,baʿdaبعدبَعْدَafterdhālikaذلكذَٰلِكَ(all) thatzanīminزنيمزَنِيمٍutterly useless.Greedy therewithal, intrusive.coarse, and furthermore, an illegitimate child[2].Cruel, moreover, and an illegitimate pretender.[1725]Violent (and cruel),- with all that, base-born,- |
| 14 | أَن كَانَ ذَا مَالٖ وَبَنِينَanأنأَنBecausekānaكانكَانَ(he) isdhāذاذَاa possessormālinمالمَالٍ(of) wealthwabanīnaوبنينوَبَنِينَand children,It is because he is possessed of wealth and childrenSimply because he has wealth and children,Because he is a possessor of wealth and children,Because he possesses wealth and (numerous) sons. |
| 15 | إِذَا تُتۡلَىٰ عَلَيۡهِ ءَايَٰتُنَا قَالَ أَسَٰطِيرُ ٱلۡأَوَّلِينَidhāإذاإِذَاWhentut'lāتتلىتُتْلَىٰare recitedʿalayhiعليهعَلَيْهِto himāyātunāآياتناءَايَٰتُنَاOur Verses,qālaقالقَالَhe says,asāṭīruأساطيرأَسَٰطِيرُ"Storiesl-awalīnaالأولينٱلْأَوَّلِينَ(of) the former (people)."That, when Our revelations are recited unto him, he saith: Mere fables of the men of old.When Our verses are recited to him, he says, “Ancient fables!”When Our verses are recited to him, he says, "Legends of the former peoples."When to him are rehearsed Our Signs, "Tales of the ancients", he cries! |
| 16 | سَنَسِمُهُۥ عَلَى ٱلۡخُرۡطُومِsanasimuhuسنسمهسَنَسِمُهُۥWe will brand himʿalāعلىعَلَىonl-khur'ṭūmiالخرطومٱلْخُرْطُومِthe snout.We shall brand him on the nose.We will soon brand him on the snout[3].We will brand him upon the snout.[1726]Soon shall We brand (the beast) on the snout! |
| 17 | إِنَّا بَلَوۡنَٰهُمۡ كَمَا بَلَوۡنَآ أَصۡحَٰبَ ٱلۡجَنَّةِ إِذۡ أَقۡسَمُواْ لَيَصۡرِمُنَّهَا مُصۡبِحِينَinnāإناإِنَّاIndeed, Webalawnāhumبلوناهمبَلَوْنَٰهُمْhave tried themkamāكماكَمَاasbalawnāبلونابَلَوْنَآWe triedaṣḥābaأصحابأَصْحَٰبَ(the) companionsl-janatiالجنةٱلْجَنَّةِ(of) the garden,idhإذإِذْwhenaqsamūأقسمواأَقْسَمُواْthey sworelayaṣrimunnahāليصرمنهالَيَصْرِمُنَّهَاto pluck its fruitmuṣ'biḥīnaمصبحينمُصْبِحِينَ(in the) morning,Lo! We have tried them as We tried the owners of the garden when they vowed that they would pluck its fruit next morning,Indeed, We have tested them [i.e., the Makkans] as We tested the people of the garden when they swore to harvest its fruits in the early morning,Indeed, We have tried them as We tried the companions of the garden, when they swore to cut its fruit in the [early] morningVerily We have tried them as We tried the People of the Garden, when they resolved to gather the fruits of the (garden) in the morning. |
| 18 | وَلَا يَسۡتَثۡنُونَwalāولاوَلَاAnd notyastathnūnaيستثنونيَسْتَثْنُونَmaking exception.And made no exception (for the Will of Allah);and made no exception [by saying: if Allah wills][4].Without making exception.[1727]But made no reservation, ("If it be Allah's Will"). |
| 19 | فَطَافَ عَلَيۡهَا طَآئِفٞ مِّن رَّبِّكَ وَهُمۡ نَآئِمُونَfaṭāfaفطاففَطَافَSo there cameʿalayhāعليهاعَلَيْهَاupon itṭāifunطائفطَآئِفٌa visitationminمنمِّنfromrabbikaربكرَّبِّكَyour Lord,wahumوهموَهُمْwhile theynāimūnaنائموننَآئِمُونَwere asleep.Then a visitation from thy Lord came upon it while they sleptThen it was struck by an affliction from your Lord while they were asleep,So there came upon it [i.e., the garden] an affliction from your Lord while they were asleep.Then there came on the (garden) a visitation from thy Lord, (which swept away) all around, while they were asleep. |
| 20 | فَأَصۡبَحَتۡ كَٱلصَّرِيمِfa-aṣbaḥatفأصبحتفَأَصْبَحَتْSo it becamekal-ṣarīmiكالصريمكَٱلصَّرِيمِas if reaped.And in the morning it was as if plucked.and it turned to ashes [as black as night].And it became as though reaped.So the (garden) became, by the morning, like a dark and desolate spot, (whose fruit had been gathered). |
| 21 | فَتَنَادَوۡاْ مُصۡبِحِينَfatanādawفتنادوافَتَنَادَوْاْAnd they called one anothermuṣ'biḥīnaمصبحينمُصْبِحِينَ(at) morning,And they cried out one unto another in the morning,Then in the early morning they called out to one another:And they called one another at morning,As the morning broke, they called out, one to another,- |
| 22 | أَنِ ٱغۡدُواْ عَلَىٰ حَرۡثِكُمۡ إِن كُنتُمۡ صَٰرِمِينَaniأنأَنِThatigh'dūاغدواٱغْدُواْ"Go earlyʿalāعلىعَلَىٰtoḥarthikumحرثكمحَرْثِكُمْyour cropinإنإِنifkuntumكنتمكُنتُمْyou wouldṣārimīnaصارمينصَٰرِمِينَpluck (the) fruit."Saying: Run unto your field if ye would pluck (the fruit).“Go early to your garden if you really wish to harvest.”[Saying], "Go early to your crop if you would cut the fruit.""Go ye to your tilth (betimes) in the morning, if ye would gather the fruits." |
| 23 | فَٱنطَلَقُواْ وَهُمۡ يَتَخَٰفَتُونَfa-inṭalaqūفانطلقوافَٱنطَلَقُواْSo they went,wahumوهموَهُمْwhile theyyatakhāfatūnaيتخافتونيَتَخَٰفَتُونَlowered (their) voices,So they went off, saying one unto another in low tones:So they set out, whispering to one another,So they set out, while lowering their voices,So they departed, conversing in secret low tones, (saying)- |
| 24 | أَن لَّا يَدۡخُلَنَّهَا ٱلۡيَوۡمَ عَلَيۡكُم مِّسۡكِينٞanأنأَنThatlāلالَّا"Notyadkhulannahāيدخلنهايَدْخُلَنَّهَاwill enter itl-yawmaاليومٱلْيَوْمَtodayʿalaykumعليكمعَلَيْكُمupon youmis'kīnunمسكينمِّسْكِينٌany poor person."No needy man shall enter it to-day against you.“Not a single poor person should enter your garden today.”[Saying], "There will surely not enter it today upon you [any] poor person.""Let not a single indigent person break in upon you into the (garden) this day." |
| 25 | وَغَدَوۡاْ عَلَىٰ حَرۡدٖ قَٰدِرِينَwaghadawوغدواوَغَدَوْاْAnd they went earlyʿalāعلىعَلَىٰwithḥardinحردحَرْدٍdeterminationqādirīnaقادرينقَٰدِرِينَable.They went betimes, strong in (this) purpose.And they left early, fully determined to stick to their plan[5].And they went early in determination, [assuming themselves] able.[1728]And they opened the morning, strong in an (unjust) resolve. |
| 26 | فَلَمَّا رَأَوۡهَا قَالُوٓاْ إِنَّا لَضَآلُّونَfalammāفلمافَلَمَّاBut whenra-awhāرأوهارَأَوْهَاthey saw it,qālūقالواقَالُوٓاْthey said,innāإناإِنَّا"Indeed, welaḍāllūnaلضالونلَضَآلُّونَ(are) surely lost.But when they saw it, they said: Lo! we are in error!But when they saw the garden, they said, “We must have lost our way!But when they saw it, they said, "Indeed, we are lost;But when they saw the (garden), they said: "We have surely lost our way: |
| 27 | بَلۡ نَحۡنُ مَحۡرُومُونَbalبلبَلْNay!naḥnuنحننَحْنُWemaḥrūmūnaمحرومونمَحْرُومُونَ(are) deprived."Nay, but we are desolate!Rather, we have been deprived.”Rather, we have been deprived.""Indeed we are shut out (of the fruits of our labour)!" |
| 28 | قَالَ أَوۡسَطُهُمۡ أَلَمۡ أَقُل لَّكُمۡ لَوۡلَا تُسَبِّحُونَqālaقالقَالَSaidawsaṭuhumأوسطهمأَوْسَطُهُمْ(the) most moderate of them,alamألمأَلَمْ"Did notaqulأقلأَقُلI telllakumلكملَّكُمْyou,lawlāلولالَوْلَا'Why nottusabbiḥūnaتسبحونتُسَبِّحُونَyou glorify (Allah)?'"The best among them said: Said I not unto you: Why glorify ye not (Allah)?The best among them said, “Did I not say to you to glorify Allah[6]?”The most moderate of them said, "Did I not say to you, 'Why do you not exalt [Allāh]?'"[1729]Said one of them, more just (than the rest): "Did I not say to you, 'Why not glorify (Allah)?'" |
| 29 | قَالُواْ سُبۡحَٰنَ رَبِّنَآ إِنَّا كُنَّا ظَٰلِمِينَqālūقالواقَالُواْThey said,sub'ḥānaسبحانسُبْحَٰنَ"Glory berabbināربنارَبِّنَآ(to) our Lord!innāإناإِنَّاIndeed, wekunnāكناكُنَّا[we] wereẓālimīnaظالمينظَٰلِمِينَwrongdoers."They said: Glorified be our Lord! Lo! we have been wrong-doers.They said, “Glory be to our Lord! We were truly wrongdoers.”They said, "Exalted is our Lord! Indeed, we were wrongdoers."They said: "Glory to our Lord! Verily we have been doing wrong!" |
| 30 | فَأَقۡبَلَ بَعۡضُهُمۡ عَلَىٰ بَعۡضٖ يَتَلَٰوَمُونَfa-aqbalaفأقبلفَأَقْبَلَThen approached,baʿḍuhumبعضهمبَعْضُهُمْsome of themʿalāعلىعَلَىٰtobaʿḍinبعضبَعْضٍothersyatalāwamūnaيتلاومونيَتَلَٰوَمُونَblaming each other.Then some of them drew near unto others, self-reproaching.Then they turned to one another, throwing blame.Then they approached one another, blaming each other.Then they turned, one against another, in reproach. |
| 31 | قَالُواْ يَٰوَيۡلَنَآ إِنَّا كُنَّا طَٰغِينَqālūقالواقَالُواْThey said,yāwaylanāيا ويلنايَٰوَيْلَنَآ"O woe to us!innāإناإِنَّاIndeed, wekunnāكناكُنَّا[we] wereṭāghīnaطاغينطَٰغِينَtransgressors.They said: Alas for us! In truth we were outrageous.They said, “Woe to us! We were surely transgressors.They said, "O woe to us; indeed we were transgressors.They said: "Alas for us! We have indeed transgressed! |
| 32 | عَسَىٰ رَبُّنَآ أَن يُبۡدِلَنَا خَيۡرٗا مِّنۡهَآ إِنَّآ إِلَىٰ رَبِّنَا رَٰغِبُونَʿasāعسىعَسَىٰPerhaps,rabbunāربنارَبُّنَآour Lord,anأنأَن[that]yub'dilanāيبدلنايُبْدِلَنَاwill substitute for uskhayranخيراخَيْرًاa bettermin'hāمنهامِّنْهَآthan it.innāإناإِنَّآIndeed, weilāإلىإِلَىٰtorabbināربنارَبِّنَاour Lordrāghibūnaراغبونرَٰغِبُونَturn devoutly."It may be that our Lord will give us better than this in place thereof. Lo! we beseech our Lord.Our Lord may give us something better than this. We certainly turn to our Lord in hope[7].”Perhaps our Lord will substitute for us [one] better than it. Indeed, we are toward our Lord desirous."[1730]"It may be that our Lord will give us in exchange a better (garden) than this: for we do turn to Him (in repentance)!" |
| 33 | كَذَٰلِكَ ٱلۡعَذَابُۖ وَلَعَذَابُ ٱلۡأٓخِرَةِ أَكۡبَرُۚ لَوۡ كَانُواْ يَعۡلَمُونَkadhālikaكذلككَذَٰلِكَSuchl-ʿadhābuالعذابٱلْعَذَابُ(is) the punishment.walaʿadhābuولعذابوَلَعَذَابُAnd surely the punishmentl-ākhiratiالآخرةٱلْءَاخِرَةِ(of) the Hereafterakbaruأكبرأَكْبَرُ(is) greater,lawلولَوْifkānūكانواكَانُواْtheyyaʿlamūnaيعلمونيَعْلَمُونَknow.Such was the punishment. And verily the punishment of the Hereafter is greater if they did but know.Such is the punishment [in this world]; but the punishment of the Hereafter is far worse, if only they knew.Such is the punishment [of this world]. And the punishment of the Hereafter is greater, if they only knew.Such is the Punishment (in this life); but greater is the Punishment in the Hereafter,- if only they knew! |
| 34 | إِنَّ لِلۡمُتَّقِينَ عِندَ رَبِّهِمۡ جَنَّٰتِ ٱلنَّعِيمِinnaإنإِنَّIndeed,lil'muttaqīnaللمتقينلِلْمُتَّقِينَfor the righteousʿindaعندعِندَwithrabbihimربهمرَبِّهِمْtheir Lordjannātiجناتجَنَّٰتِ(are) Gardensl-naʿīmiالنعيمٱلنَّعِيمِ(of) Delight.Lo! for those who keep from evil are gardens of bliss with their Lord.Indeed, the righteous will have gardens of bliss with their Lord.Indeed, for the righteous with their Lord are the Gardens of Pleasure.Verily, for the Righteous, are Gardens of Delight, in the Presence of their Lord. |
| 35 | أَفَنَجۡعَلُ ٱلۡمُسۡلِمِينَ كَٱلۡمُجۡرِمِينَafanajʿaluأفنجعلأَفَنَجْعَلُThen will We treatl-mus'limīnaالمسلمينٱلْمُسْلِمِينَthe Muslimskal-muj'rimīnaكالمجرمينكَٱلْمُجْرِمِينَlike the criminals?Shall We then treat those who have surrendered as We treat the guilty?Should We then treat Muslims like the wicked?Then will We treat the Muslims like the criminals?Shall We then treat the People of Faith like the People of Sin? |
| 36 | مَا لَكُمۡ كَيۡفَ تَحۡكُمُونَmāمامَاWhatlakumلكملَكُمْ(is) for you?kayfaكيفكَيْفَHowtaḥkumūnaتحكمونتَحْكُمُونَ(do) you judge?What aileth you? How foolishly ye judge!What is the matter with you that you make such a judgment?What is [the matter] with you? How do you judge?What is the matter with you? How judge ye? |
| 37 | أَمۡ لَكُمۡ كِتَٰبٞ فِيهِ تَدۡرُسُونَamأمأَمْOrlakumلكملَكُمْ(is) for youkitābunكتابكِتَٰبٌa bookfīhiفيهفِيهِwhereintadrusūnaتدرسونتَدْرُسُونَyou learn,Or have ye a scripture wherein ye learnOr do you have a scripture in which you readOr do you have a scripture in which you learnOr have ye a book through which ye learn- |
| 38 | إِنَّ لَكُمۡ فِيهِ لَمَا تَخَيَّرُونَinnaإنإِنَّIndeedlakumلكملَكُمْfor youfīhiفيهفِيهِin itlamāلمالَمَاwhattakhayyarūnaتخيرونتَخَيَّرُونَyou choose?That ye shall indeed have all that ye choose?that you will be given whatever you choose?That indeed for you is whatever you choose?That ye shall have, through it whatever ye choose? |
| 39 | أَمۡ لَكُمۡ أَيۡمَٰنٌ عَلَيۡنَا بَٰلِغَةٌ إِلَىٰ يَوۡمِ ٱلۡقِيَٰمَةِ إِنَّ لَكُمۡ لَمَا تَحۡكُمُونَamأمأَمْOrlakumلكملَكُمْfor youaymānunأيمانأَيْمَٰنٌoathsʿalaynāعليناعَلَيْنَاfrom us,bālighatunبالغةبَٰلِغَةٌreachingilāإلىإِلَىٰtoyawmiيوميَوْمِ(the) Dayl-qiyāmatiالقيامةٱلْقِيَٰمَةِ(of) the Resurrection,innaإنإِنَّindeed,lakumلكملَكُمْfor youlamāلمالَمَا(is) whattaḥkumūnaتحكمونتَحْكُمُونَyou judge?Or have ye a covenant on oath from Us that reacheth to the Day of Judgment, that yours shall be all that ye ordain?Or do you have a solemn promise binding upon Us until the Day of Resurrection, that you will have whatever you decide for yourselves?Or do you have oaths [binding] upon Us, extending until the Day of Resurrection, that indeed for you is whatever you judge?Or have ye Covenants with Us to oath, reaching to the Day of Judgment, (providing) that ye shall have whatever ye shall demand? |
| 40 | سَلۡهُمۡ أَيُّهُم بِذَٰلِكَ زَعِيمٌsalhumسلهمسَلْهُمْAsk them,ayyuhumأيهمأَيُّهُمwhich of thembidhālikaبذلكبِذَٰلِكَfor thatzaʿīmunزعيمزَعِيمٌ(is) responsible.Ask them (O Muhammad) which of them will vouch for that!Ask them which of them can guarantee that.Ask them which of them, for that [claim], is responsible.Ask thou of them, which of them will stand surety for that! |
| 41 | أَمۡ لَهُمۡ شُرَكَآءُ فَلۡيَأۡتُواْ بِشُرَكَآئِهِمۡ إِن كَانُواْ صَٰدِقِينَamأمأَمْOrlahumلهملَهُمْ(are) for themshurakāuشركاءشُرَكَآءُpartners?falyatūفليأتوافَلْيَأْتُواْThen let them bringbishurakāihimبشركائهمبِشُرَكَآئِهِمْtheir partners,inإنإِنifkānūكانواكَانُواْthey areṣādiqīnaصادقينصَٰدِقِينَtruthful.Or have they other gods? Then let them bring their other gods if they are truthfulOr do they have associate-gods? Then let them bring forth their associate-gods[8], if they are truthful.Or do they have partners?[1731] Then let them bring their partners, if they should be truthful.Or have they some "Partners" (in Allahhead)? Then let them produce their "partners", if they are truthful! |
| 42 | يَوۡمَ يُكۡشَفُ عَن سَاقٖ وَيُدۡعَوۡنَ إِلَى ٱلسُّجُودِ فَلَا يَسۡتَطِيعُونَyawmaيوميَوْمَ(The) Dayyuk'shafuيكشفيُكْشَفُwill be uncoveredʿanعنعَنfromsāqinساقسَاقٍthe shinwayud'ʿawnaويدعونوَيُدْعَوْنَand they will be calledilāإلىإِلَىtol-sujūdiالسجودٱلسُّجُودِprostrate,falāفلافَلَاbut notyastaṭīʿūnaيستطيعونيَسْتَطِيعُونَthey will be able,On the day when it befalleth in earnest, and they are ordered to prostrate themselves but are not able,On the Day when the Shin [of Allah] will be uncovered[9], and they are invited to prostrate, but they will not be able to do so.The Day the shin will be uncovered[1732] and they are invited to prostration but they [i.e., the disbelievers] will not be able,The Day that the shin shall be laid bare, and they shall be summoned to bow in adoration, but they shall not be able,- |
| 43 | خَٰشِعَةً أَبۡصَٰرُهُمۡ تَرۡهَقُهُمۡ ذِلَّةٞۖ وَقَدۡ كَانُواْ يُدۡعَوۡنَ إِلَى ٱلسُّجُودِ وَهُمۡ سَٰلِمُونَkhāshiʿatanخاشعةخَٰشِعَةًHumbled,abṣāruhumأبصارهمأَبْصَٰرُهُمْtheir eyes,tarhaquhumترهقهمتَرْهَقُهُمْwill cover themdhillatunذلةذِلَّةٌhumiliation.waqadوقدوَقَدْAnd indeed,kānūكانواكَانُواْthey wereyud'ʿawnaيدعونيُدْعَوْنَcalledilāإلىإِلَىtol-sujūdiالسجودٱلسُّجُودِprostratewahumوهموَهُمْwhile theysālimūnaسالمونسَٰلِمُونَ(were) sound.With eyes downcast, abasement stupefying them. And they had been summoned to prostrate themselves while they were yet unhurt.Their eyes will be downcast, overwhelmed with humiliation, for they were invited to prostrate when they were capable[10] [but they refused].Their eyes humbled, humiliation will cover them. And they used to be invited to prostration while they were sound.[1733]Their eyes will be cast down,- ignominy will cover them; seeing that they had been summoned aforetime to bow in adoration, while they were whole, (and had refused). |
| 44 | فَذَرۡنِي وَمَن يُكَذِّبُ بِهَٰذَا ٱلۡحَدِيثِۖ سَنَسۡتَدۡرِجُهُم مِّنۡ حَيۡثُ لَا يَعۡلَمُونَfadharnīفذرنيفَذَرْنِىSo leave Mewamanومنوَمَنand whoeveryukadhibuيكذبيُكَذِّبُdeniesbihādhāبهذابِهَٰذَاthisl-ḥadīthiالحديثٱلْحَدِيثِStatement,sanastadrijuhumسنستدرجهمسَنَسْتَدْرِجُهُمWe will progressively lead themminمنمِّنْfromḥaythuحيثحَيْثُwherelāلالَاnotyaʿlamūnaيعلمونيَعْلَمُونَthey know.Leave Me (to deal) with those who give the lie to this pronouncement. We shall lead them on by steps from whence they know not.So leave to Me those who reject this message [O Prophet]. We will gradually lead them to their ruin in ways that they do not perceive[11].So leave Me, [O Muḥammad], with [the matter of] whoever denies this statement [i.e., the Qur’ān]. We will progressively lead them [to punishment] from where they do not know.[1734]Then leave Me alone with such as reject this Message: by degrees shall We punish them from directions they perceive not. |
| 45 | وَأُمۡلِي لَهُمۡۚ إِنَّ كَيۡدِي مَتِينٌwa-um'līوأمليوَأُمْلِىAnd I will give respitelahumلهملَهُمْto them.innaإنإِنَّIndeed,kaydīكيديكَيْدِىMy planmatīnunمتينمَتِينٌ(is) firm.Yet I bear with them, for lo! My scheme is firm.I will give them respite, but My plan is firm.And I will give them time. Indeed, My plan is firm.A (long) respite will I grant them: truly powerful is My Plan. |
| 46 | أَمۡ تَسۡـَٔلُهُمۡ أَجۡرٗا فَهُم مِّن مَّغۡرَمٖ مُّثۡقَلُونَamأمأَمْOrtasaluhumتسألهمتَسْـَٔلُهُمْyou ask themajranأجراأَجْرًاa payment,fahumفهمفَهُمso theyminمنمِّنfrommaghraminمغرممَّغْرَمٍ(the) debtmuth'qalūnaمثقلونمُّثْقَلُونَ(are) burdened?Or dost thou (Muhammad) ask a fee from them so that they are heavily taxed?Or are you asking them for a reward, so they find it too burdensome?Or do you ask of them a payment, so they are by debt burdened down?Or is it that thou dost ask them for a reward, so that they are burdened with a load of debt?- |
| 47 | أَمۡ عِندَهُمُ ٱلۡغَيۡبُ فَهُمۡ يَكۡتُبُونَamأمأَمْOrʿindahumuعندهمعِندَهُمُ(is) with theml-ghaybuالغيبٱلْغَيْبُthe unseen,fahumفهمفَهُمْso theyyaktubūnaيكتبونيَكْتُبُونَwrite it?Or is the Unseen theirs that they can write (thereof)?Or do they have knowledge of the unseen, so they write it down?Or have they [knowledge of] the unseen, so they write [it] down?Or that the Unseen is in their hands, so that they can write it down? |
| 48 | فَٱصۡبِرۡ لِحُكۡمِ رَبِّكَ وَلَا تَكُن كَصَاحِبِ ٱلۡحُوتِ إِذۡ نَادَىٰ وَهُوَ مَكۡظُومٞfa-iṣ'birفاصبرفَٱصْبِرْSo be patientliḥuk'miلحكملِحُكْمِfor (the) decisionrabbikaربكرَبِّكَ(of) your Lord,walāولاوَلَاand (do) nottakunتكنتَكُنbekaṣāḥibiكصاحبكَصَاحِبِlike (the) companionl-ḥūtiالحوتٱلْحُوتِ(of) the fish,idhإذإِذْwhennādāنادىنَادَىٰhe called out,wahuwaوهووَهُوَwhile hemakẓūmunمكظوممَكْظُومٌ(was) distressed.But wait thou for thy Lord's decree, and be not like him of the fish, who cried out in despair.So be patient with the decree of your Lord, and do not be like the man of the Whale [i.e., Jonah], when he cried out in anguish[12].Then be patient for the decision of your Lord, [O Muḥammad], and be not like the companion of the fish [i.e., Jonah] when he called out while he was distressed.So wait with patience for the Command of thy Lord, and be not like the Companion of the Fish,- when he cried out in agony. |
| 49 | لَّوۡلَآ أَن تَدَٰرَكَهُۥ نِعۡمَةٞ مِّن رَّبِّهِۦ لَنُبِذَ بِٱلۡعَرَآءِ وَهُوَ مَذۡمُومٞlawlāلولالَّوْلَآIf notanأنأَنthattadārakahuتداركهتَدَٰرَكَهُۥovertook himniʿ'matunنعمةنِعْمَةٌa Favorminمنمِّنfromrabbihiربهرَّبِّهِۦhis Lord,lanubidhaلنبذلَنُبِذَsurely he would have been thrownbil-ʿarāiبالعراءبِٱلْعَرَآءِonto (the) naked shorewahuwaوهووَهُوَwhile hemadhmūmunمذموممَذْمُومٌ(was) blamed.Had it not been that favour from his Lord had reached him he surely had been cast into the wilderness while he was reprobate.Had it not been for the grace that he received from his Lord, he would have surely been thrown onto the barren shore, blameworthy[13].If not that a favor [i.e., mercy] from his Lord overtook him, he would have been thrown onto the naked shore while he was censured.[1735]Had not Grace from his Lord reached him, he would indeed have been cast off on the naked shore, in disgrace. |
| 50 | فَٱجۡتَبَٰهُ رَبُّهُۥ فَجَعَلَهُۥ مِنَ ٱلصَّٰلِحِينَfa-ij'tabāhuفاجتباهفَٱجْتَبَٰهُBut chose him,rabbuhuربهرَبُّهُۥhis Lord,fajaʿalahuفجعلهفَجَعَلَهُۥand made himminaمنمِنَofl-ṣāliḥīnaالصالحينٱلصَّٰلِحِينَthe righteous.But his Lord chose him and placed him among the righteous.But his Lord chose him and made him one of the righteous.And his Lord chose him and made him of the righteous.Thus did his Lord choose him and make him of the Company of the Righteous. |
| 51 | وَإِن يَكَادُ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ لَيُزۡلِقُونَكَ بِأَبۡصَٰرِهِمۡ لَمَّا سَمِعُواْ ٱلذِّكۡرَ وَيَقُولُونَ إِنَّهُۥ لَمَجۡنُونٞwa-inوإنوَإِنAnd indeed,yakāduيكاديَكَادُwould almostalladhīnaالذينٱلَّذِينَthose whokafarūكفرواكَفَرُواْdisbelieve,layuz'liqūnakaليزلقونكلَيُزْلِقُونَكَsurely make you slipbi-abṣārihimبأبصارهمبِأَبْصَٰرِهِمْwith their looklammāلمالَمَّاwhensamiʿūسمعواسَمِعُواْthey hearl-dhik'raالذكرٱلذِّكْرَthe Message,wayaqūlūnaويقولونوَيَقُولُونَand they say,innahuإنهإِنَّهُۥ"Indeed, helamajnūnunلمجنونلَمَجْنُونٌ(is) surely mad."And lo! those who disbelieve would fain disconcert thee with their eyes when they hear the Reminder, and they say: Lo! he is indeed mad;The disbelievers would almost strike you down with their malicious gazes when they hear the Reminder, and they say, “He is certainly mad.”And indeed, those who disbelieve would almost make you slip with their eyes [i.e., looks] when they hear the message, and they say, "Indeed, he is mad."And the Unbelievers would almost trip thee up with their eyes when they hear the Message; and they say: "Surely he is possessed!" |
| 52 | وَمَا هُوَ إِلَّا ذِكۡرٞ لِّلۡعَٰلَمِينَwamāوماوَمَاAnd nothuwaهوهُوَit (is)illāإلاإِلَّاbutdhik'runذكرذِكْرٌa Reminderlil'ʿālamīnaللعالمينلِّلْعَٰلَمِينَto the worlds.When it is naught else than a Reminder to creation.But it is nothing other than a reminder to the whole world.But it is not except a reminder to the worlds.But it is nothing less than a Message to all the worlds. |
| 1 | ن وَالْقَلَمِ وَمَا يَسْطُرُونَ |
| 2 | مَا أَنتَ بِنِعْمَةِ رَبِّكَ بِمَجْنُونٍ |
| 3 | وَإِنَّ لَكَ لَأَجْرًا غَيْرَ مَمْنُونٍ |
| 4 | وَإِنَّكَ لَعَلَىٰ خُلُقٍ عَظِيمٍ |
| 5 | فَسَتُبْصِرُ وَيُبْصِرُونَ |
| 6 | بِأَييِّكُمُ الْمَفْتُونُ |
| 7 | إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَن ضَلَّ عَن سَبِيلِهِ وَهُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِالْمُهْتَدِينَ |
| 8 | فَلَا تُطِعِ الْمُكَذِّبِينَ |
| 9 | وَدُّوا لَوْ تُدْهِنُ فَيُدْهِنُونَ |
| 10 | وَلَا تُطِعْ كُلَّ حَلَّافٍ مَّهِينٍ |
| 11 | هَمَّازٍ مَّشَّاءٍ بِنَمِيمٍ |
| 12 | مَّنَّاعٍ لِّلْخَيْرِ مُعْتَدٍ أَثِيمٍ |
| 13 | عُتُلٍّ بَعْدَ ذَٰلِكَ زَنِيمٍ |
| 14 | أَن كَانَ ذَا مَالٍ وَبَنِينَ |
| 15 | إِذَا تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِ آيَاتُنَا قَالَ أَسَاطِيرُ الْأَوَّلِينَ |
| 16 | سَنَسِمُهُ عَلَى الْخُرْطُومِ |
| 17 | إِنَّا بَلَوْنَاهُمْ كَمَا بَلَوْنَا أَصْحَابَ الْجَنَّةِ إِذْ أَقْسَمُوا لَيَصْرِمُنَّهَا مُصْبِحِينَ |
| 18 | وَلَا يَسْتَثْنُونَ |
| 19 | فَطَافَ عَلَيْهَا طَائِفٌ مِّن رَّبِّكَ وَهُمْ نَائِمُونَ |
| 20 | فَأَصْبَحَتْ كَالصَّرِيمِ |
| 21 | فَتَنَادَوْا مُصْبِحِينَ |
| 22 | أَنِ اغْدُوا عَلَىٰ حَرْثِكُمْ إِن كُنتُمْ صَارِمِينَ |
| 23 | فَانطَلَقُوا وَهُمْ يَتَخَافَتُونَ |
| 24 | أَن لَّا يَدْخُلَنَّهَا الْيَوْمَ عَلَيْكُم مِّسْكِينٌ |
| 25 | وَغَدَوْا عَلَىٰ حَرْدٍ قَادِرِينَ |
| 26 | فَلَمَّا رَأَوْهَا قَالُوا إِنَّا لَضَالُّونَ |
| 27 | بَلْ نَحْنُ مَحْرُومُونَ |
| 28 | قَالَ أَوْسَطُهُمْ أَلَمْ أَقُل لَّكُمْ لَوْلَا تُسَبِّحُونَ |
| 29 | قَالُوا سُبْحَانَ رَبِّنَا إِنَّا كُنَّا ظَالِمِينَ |
| 30 | فَأَقْبَلَ بَعْضُهُمْ عَلَىٰ بَعْضٍ يَتَلَاوَمُونَ |
| 31 | قَالُوا يَا وَيْلَنَا إِنَّا كُنَّا طَاغِينَ |
| 32 | عَسَىٰ رَبُّنَا أَن يُبْدِلَنَا خَيْرًا مِّنْهَا إِنَّا إِلَىٰ رَبِّنَا رَاغِبُونَ |
| 33 | كَذَٰلِكَ الْعَذَابُ وَلَعَذَابُ الْآخِرَةِ أَكْبَرُ لَوْ كَانُوا يَعْلَمُونَ |
| 34 | إِنَّ لِلْمُتَّقِينَ عِندَ رَبِّهِمْ جَنَّاتِ النَّعِيمِ |
| 35 | أَفَنَجْعَلُ الْمُسْلِمِينَ كَالْمُجْرِمِينَ |
| 36 | مَا لَكُمْ كَيْفَ تَحْكُمُونَ |
| 37 | أَمْ لَكُمْ كِتَابٌ فِيهِ تَدْرُسُونَ |
| 38 | إِنَّ لَكُمْ فِيهِ لَمَا تَخَيَّرُونَ |
| 39 | أَمْ لَكُمْ أَيْمَانٌ عَلَيْنَا بَالِغَةٌ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ إِنَّ لَكُمْ لَمَا تَحْكُمُونَ |
| 40 | سَلْهُمْ أَيُّهُم بِذَٰلِكَ زَعِيمٌ |
| 41 | أَمْ لَهُمْ شُرَكَاءُ فَلْيَأْتُوا بِشُرَكَائِهِمْ إِن كَانُوا صَادِقِينَ |
| 42 | يَوْمَ يُكْشَفُ عَن سَاقٍ وَيُدْعَوْنَ إِلَى السُّجُودِ فَلَا يَسْتَطِيعُونَ |
| 43 | خَاشِعَةً أَبْصَارُهُمْ تَرْهَقُهُمْ ذِلَّةٌ وَقَدْ كَانُوا يُدْعَوْنَ إِلَى السُّجُودِ وَهُمْ سَالِمُونَ |
| 44 | فَذَرْنِي وَمَن يُكَذِّبُ بِهَٰذَا الْحَدِيثِ سَنَسْتَدْرِجُهُم مِّنْ حَيْثُ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ |
| 45 | وَأُمْلِي لَهُمْ إِنَّ كَيْدِي مَتِينٌ |
| 46 | أَمْ تَسْأَلُهُمْ أَجْرًا فَهُم مِّن مَّغْرَمٍ مُّثْقَلُونَ |
| 47 | أَمْ عِندَهُمُ الْغَيْبُ فَهُمْ يَكْتُبُونَ |
| 48 | فَاصْبِرْ لِحُكْمِ رَبِّكَ وَلَا تَكُن كَصَاحِبِ الْحُوتِ إِذْ نَادَىٰ وَهُوَ مَكْظُومٌ |
| 49 | لَّوْلَا أَن تَدَارَكَهُ نِعْمَةٌ مِّن رَّبِّهِ لَنُبِذَ بِالْعَرَاءِ وَهُوَ مَذْمُومٌ |
| 50 | فَاجْتَبَاهُ رَبُّهُ فَجَعَلَهُ مِنَ الصَّالِحِينَ |
| 51 | وَإِن يَكَادُ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا لَيُزْلِقُونَكَ بِأَبْصَارِهِمْ لَمَّا سَمِعُوا الذِّكْرَ وَيَقُولُونَ إِنَّهُ لَمَجْنُونٌ |
| 52 | وَمَا هُوَ إِلَّا ذِكْرٌ لِّلْعَالَمِينَ |
| 1 | نٓۚ وَٱلْقَلَمِ وَمَا يَسْطُرُونَnoonننٓNun.wal-qalamiوالقلموَٱلْقَلَمِBy the penwamāوماوَمَاand whatyasṭurūnaيسطرونيَسْطُرُونَthey write,Nun. By the pen and that which they write (therewith),Nūn[1]. By the pen and what they [i.e., the angels] write [in the Records of deeds],Nūn.[1724] By the pen and what they inscribe,Nun. By the Pen and the (Record) which (men) write,- |
| 2 | مَآ أَنتَ بِنِعْمَةِ رَبِّكَ بِمَجْنُونٖmāمامَآNotantaأنتأَنتَyou (are),biniʿ'matiبنعمةبِنِعْمَةِby (the) Gracerabbikaربكرَبِّكَ(of) your Lord,bimajnūninبمجنونبِمَجْنُونٍa madman.Thou art not, for thy Lord's favour unto thee, a madman.By the grace of your Lord [O Prophet], you are not a madman.You are not, [O Muḥammad], by the favor of your Lord, a madman.Thou art not, by the Grace of thy Lord, mad or possessed. |
| 3 | وَإِنَّ لَكَ لَأَجْرًا غَيْرَ مَمْنُونٖwa-innaوإنوَإِنَّAnd indeed,lakaلكلَكَfor youla-ajranلأجرالَأَجْرًاsurely (is) a rewardghayraغيرغَيْرَwithoutmamnūninممنونمَمْنُونٍend.And lo! thine verily will be a reward unfailing.You will surely have a never-ending reward.And indeed, for you is a reward uninterrupted.Nay, verily for thee is a Reward unfailing: |
| 4 | وَإِنَّكَ لَعَلَىٰ خُلُقٍ عَظِيمٖwa-innakaوإنكوَإِنَّكَAnd indeed, youlaʿalāلعلىلَعَلَىٰsurely (are)khuluqinخلقخُلُقٍ(of) a moral characterʿaẓīminعظيمعَظِيمٍgreat.And lo! thou art of a tremendous nature.Indeed, you are of a great moral character.And indeed, you are of a great moral character.And thou (standest) on an exalted standard of character. |
| 5 | فَسَتُبْصِرُ وَيُبْصِرُونَfasatub'ṣiruفستبصرفَسَتُبْصِرُSo you will seewayub'ṣirūnaويبصرونوَيُبْصِرُونَand they will see,And thou wilt see and they will seeSoon you will see and they will see,So you will see and they will seeSoon wilt thou see, and they will see, |
| 6 | بِأَييِّكُمُ ٱلْمَفْتُونُbi-ayyikumuبأييكمبِأَييِّكُمُWhich of youl-maftūnuالمفتونٱلْمَفْتُونُ(is) the afflicted one.Which of you is the afflicted [by a devil].Which of you is the demented.which of you is afflicted with madness.Which of you is afflicted with madness. |
| 7 | إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَن ضَلَّ عَن سَبِيلِهِۦ وَهُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِٱلْمُهْتَدِينَinnaإنإِنَّIndeed,rabbakaربكرَبَّكَyour Lord,huwaهوهُوَHeaʿlamuأعلمأَعْلَمُ(is) most knowingbimanبمنبِمَنof (he) whoḍallaضلضَلَّhas strayedʿanعنعَنfromsabīlihiسبيلهسَبِيلِهِۦHis way,wahuwaوهووَهُوَand Heaʿlamuأعلمأَعْلَمُ(is) most knowingbil-muh'tadīnaبالمهتدينبِٱلْمُهْتَدِينَof the guided ones.Lo! thy Lord is Best Aware of him who strayeth from His way, and He is Best Aware of those who walk aright.Indeed, your Lord alone knows best who has strayed from His way and those who are rightly guided.Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who has gone astray from His way, and He is most knowing of the [rightly] guided.Verily it is thy Lord that knoweth best, which (among men) hath strayed from His Path: and He knoweth best those who receive (true) Guidance. |
| 8 | فَلَا تُطِعِ ٱلْمُكَذِّبِينَfalāفلافَلَاSo (do) nottuṭiʿiتطعتُطِعِobeyl-mukadhibīnaالمكذبينٱلْمُكَذِّبِينَthe deniers.Therefor obey not thou the rejectersSo do not obey the deniers.Then do not obey the deniers.So hearken not to those who deny (the Truth). |
| 9 | وَدُّواْ لَوْ تُدْهِنُ فَيُدْهِنُونَwaddūودواوَدُّواْThey wishlawلولَوْthattud'hinuتدهنتُدْهِنُyou should compromise,fayud'hinūnaفيدهنونفَيُدْهِنُونَso they would compromise.Who would have had thee compromise, that they may compromise.They wish that you would compromise so they would too compromise.They wish that you would soften [in your position], so they would soften [toward you].Their desire is that thou shouldst be pliant: so would they be pliant. |
| 10 | وَلَا تُطِعْ كُلَّ حَلَّافٖ مَّهِينٍwalāولاوَلَاAnd (do) nottuṭiʿتطعتُطِعْobeykullaكلكُلَّeveryḥallāfinحلافحَلَّافٍhabitual swearermahīninمهينمَّهِينٍworthless,Neither obey thou each feeble oath-monger,And do not obey every disgraceful swearer,And do not obey every worthless habitual swearerHeed not the type of despicable men,- ready with oaths, |
| 11 | هَمَّازٖ مَّشَّآءِۭ بِنَمِيمٖhammāzinهمازهَمَّازٍDefamermashāinمشاءمَّشَّآءٍۭgoing aboutbinamīminبنميمبِنَمِيمٍwith malicious gossip,Detracter, spreader abroad of slanders,backbiter, gossip-monger,[And] scorner, going about with malicious gossip -A slanderer, going about with calumnies, |
| 12 | مَّنَّاعٖ لِّلْخَيْرِ مُعْتَدٍ أَثِيمٍmannāʿinمناعمَّنَّاعٍA preventer,lil'khayriللخيرلِّلْخَيْرِof (the) good,muʿ'tadinمعتدمُعْتَدٍtransgressor,athīminأثيمأَثِيمٍsinful,Hinderer of the good, transgressor, malefactorwithholder of good, transgressor, sinful,A preventer of good, transgressing and sinful,(Habitually) hindering (all) good, transgressing beyond bounds, deep in sin, |
| 13 | عُتُلِّۭ بَعْدَ ذَٰلِكَ زَنِيمٍʿutullinعتلعُتُلٍّۭCruel,baʿdaبعدبَعْدَafterdhālikaذلكذَٰلِكَ(all) thatzanīminزنيمزَنِيمٍutterly useless.Greedy therewithal, intrusive.coarse, and furthermore, an illegitimate child[2].Cruel, moreover, and an illegitimate pretender.[1725]Violent (and cruel),- with all that, base-born,- |
| 14 | أَن كَانَ ذَا مَالٖ وَبَنِينَanأنأَنBecausekānaكانكَانَ(he) isdhāذاذَاa possessormālinمالمَالٍ(of) wealthwabanīnaوبنينوَبَنِينَand children,It is because he is possessed of wealth and childrenSimply because he has wealth and children,Because he is a possessor of wealth and children,Because he possesses wealth and (numerous) sons. |
| 15 | إِذَا تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِ ءَايَٰتُنَا قَالَ أَسَٰطِيرُ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَidhāإذاإِذَاWhentut'lāتتلىتُتْلَىٰare recitedʿalayhiعليهعَلَيْهِto himāyātunāآياتناءَايَٰتُنَاOur Verses,qālaقالقَالَhe says,asāṭīruأساطيرأَسَٰطِيرُ"Storiesl-awalīnaالأولينٱلْأَوَّلِينَ(of) the former (people)."That, when Our revelations are recited unto him, he saith: Mere fables of the men of old.When Our verses are recited to him, he says, “Ancient fables!”When Our verses are recited to him, he says, "Legends of the former peoples."When to him are rehearsed Our Signs, "Tales of the ancients", he cries! |
| 16 | سَنَسِمُهُ عَلَى ٱلْخُرْطُومِsanasimuhuسنسمهسَنَسِمُهُWe will brand himʿalāعلىعَلَىonl-khur'ṭūmiالخرطومٱلْخُرْطُومِthe snout.We shall brand him on the nose.We will soon brand him on the snout[3].We will brand him upon the snout.[1726]Soon shall We brand (the beast) on the snout! |
| 17 | إِنَّا بَلَوْنَٰهُمْ كَمَا بَلَوْنَآ أَصْحَٰبَ ٱلْجَنَّةِ إِذْ أَقْسَمُواْ لَيَصْرِمُنَّهَا مُصْبِحِينَinnāإناإِنَّاIndeed, Webalawnāhumبلوناهمبَلَوْنَٰهُمْhave tried themkamāكماكَمَاasbalawnāبلونابَلَوْنَآWe triedaṣḥābaأصحابأَصْحَٰبَ(the) companionsl-janatiالجنةٱلْجَنَّةِ(of) the garden,idhإذإِذْwhenaqsamūأقسمواأَقْسَمُواْthey sworelayaṣrimunnahāليصرمنهالَيَصْرِمُنَّهَاto pluck its fruitmuṣ'biḥīnaمصبحينمُصْبِحِينَ(in the) morning,Lo! We have tried them as We tried the owners of the garden when they vowed that they would pluck its fruit next morning,Indeed, We have tested them [i.e., the Makkans] as We tested the people of the garden when they swore to harvest its fruits in the early morning,Indeed, We have tried them as We tried the companions of the garden, when they swore to cut its fruit in the [early] morningVerily We have tried them as We tried the People of the Garden, when they resolved to gather the fruits of the (garden) in the morning. |
| 18 | وَلَا يَسْتَثْنُونَwalāولاوَلَاAnd notyastathnūnaيستثنونيَسْتَثْنُونَmaking exception.And made no exception (for the Will of Allah);and made no exception [by saying: if Allah wills][4].Without making exception.[1727]But made no reservation, ("If it be Allah's Will"). |
| 19 | فَطَافَ عَلَيْهَا طَآئِفَ مِّن رَّبِّكَ وَهُمْ نَآئِمُونَfaṭāfaفطاففَطَافَSo there cameʿalayhāعليهاعَلَيْهَاupon itṭāifunطائفطَآئِفٌa visitationminمنمِّنfromrabbikaربكرَّبِّكَyour Lord,wahumوهموَهُمْwhile theynāimūnaنائموننَآئِمُونَwere asleep.Then a visitation from thy Lord came upon it while they sleptThen it was struck by an affliction from your Lord while they were asleep,So there came upon it [i.e., the garden] an affliction from your Lord while they were asleep.Then there came on the (garden) a visitation from thy Lord, (which swept away) all around, while they were asleep. |
| 20 | فَأَصْبَحَتْ كَٱلصَّرِيمِfa-aṣbaḥatفأصبحتفَأَصْبَحَتْSo it becamekal-ṣarīmiكالصريمكَٱلصَّرِيمِas if reaped.And in the morning it was as if plucked.and it turned to ashes [as black as night].And it became as though reaped.So the (garden) became, by the morning, like a dark and desolate spot, (whose fruit had been gathered). |
| 21 | فَتَنَادَوْاْ مُصْبِحِينَfatanādawفتنادوافَتَنَادَوْاْAnd they called one anothermuṣ'biḥīnaمصبحينمُصْبِحِينَ(at) morning,And they cried out one unto another in the morning,Then in the early morning they called out to one another:And they called one another at morning,As the morning broke, they called out, one to another,- |
| 22 | أَنِ ٱغْدُواْ عَلَىٰ حَرْثِكُمْ إِن كُنتُمْ صَٰرِمِينَaniأنأَنِThatigh'dūاغدواٱغْدُواْ"Go earlyʿalāعلىعَلَىٰtoḥarthikumحرثكمحَرْثِكُمْyour cropinإنإِنifkuntumكنتمكُنتُمْyou wouldṣārimīnaصارمينصَٰرِمِينَpluck (the) fruit."Saying: Run unto your field if ye would pluck (the fruit).“Go early to your garden if you really wish to harvest.”[Saying], "Go early to your crop if you would cut the fruit.""Go ye to your tilth (betimes) in the morning, if ye would gather the fruits." |
| 23 | فَٱنطَلَقُواْ وَهُمْ يَتَخَٰفَتُونَfa-inṭalaqūفانطلقوافَٱنطَلَقُواْSo they went,wahumوهموَهُمْwhile theyyatakhāfatūnaيتخافتونيَتَخَٰفَتُونَlowered (their) voices,So they went off, saying one unto another in low tones:So they set out, whispering to one another,So they set out, while lowering their voices,So they departed, conversing in secret low tones, (saying)- |
| 24 | أَن لَّا يَدْخُلَنَّهَا ٱلْيَوْمَ عَلَيْكُم مِّسْكِينَanأنأَنThatlāلالَّا"Notyadkhulannahāيدخلنهايَدْخُلَنَّهَاwill enter itl-yawmaاليومٱلْيَوْمَtodayʿalaykumعليكمعَلَيْكُمupon youmis'kīnunمسكينمِّسْكِينٌany poor person."No needy man shall enter it to-day against you.“Not a single poor person should enter your garden today.”[Saying], "There will surely not enter it today upon you [any] poor person.""Let not a single indigent person break in upon you into the (garden) this day." |
| 25 | وَغَدَوْاْ عَلَىٰ حَرْدٖ قَٰدِرِينَwaghadawوغدواوَغَدَوْاْAnd they went earlyʿalāعلىعَلَىٰwithḥardinحردحَرْدٍdeterminationqādirīnaقادرينقَٰدِرِينَable.They went betimes, strong in (this) purpose.And they left early, fully determined to stick to their plan[5].And they went early in determination, [assuming themselves] able.[1728]And they opened the morning, strong in an (unjust) resolve. |
| 26 | فَلَمَّا رَأَوْهَا قَالُوٓاْ إِنَّا لَضَآلُّونَfalammāفلمافَلَمَّاBut whenra-awhāرأوهارَأَوْهَاthey saw it,qālūقالواقَالُوٓاْthey said,innāإناإِنَّا"Indeed, welaḍāllūnaلضالونلَضَآلُّونَ(are) surely lost.But when they saw it, they said: Lo! we are in error!But when they saw the garden, they said, “We must have lost our way!But when they saw it, they said, "Indeed, we are lost;But when they saw the (garden), they said: "We have surely lost our way: |
| 27 | بَلْ نَحْنُ مَحْرُومُونَbalبلبَلْNay!naḥnuنحننَحْنُWemaḥrūmūnaمحرومونمَحْرُومُونَ(are) deprived."Nay, but we are desolate!Rather, we have been deprived.”Rather, we have been deprived.""Indeed we are shut out (of the fruits of our labour)!" |
| 28 | قَالَ أَوْسَطُهُمْ أَلَمْ أَقُل لَّكُمْ لَوْلَا تُسَبِّحُونَqālaقالقَالَSaidawsaṭuhumأوسطهمأَوْسَطُهُمْ(the) most moderate of them,alamألمأَلَمْ"Did notaqulأقلأَقُلI telllakumلكملَّكُمْyou,lawlāلولالَوْلَا'Why nottusabbiḥūnaتسبحونتُسَبِّحُونَyou glorify (Allah)?'"The best among them said: Said I not unto you: Why glorify ye not (Allah)?The best among them said, “Did I not say to you to glorify Allah[6]?”The most moderate of them said, "Did I not say to you, 'Why do you not exalt [Allāh]?'"[1729]Said one of them, more just (than the rest): "Did I not say to you, 'Why not glorify (Allah)?'" |
| 29 | قَالُواْ سُبْحَٰنَ رَبِّنَآ إِنَّا كُنَّا ظَٰلِمِينَqālūقالواقَالُواْThey said,sub'ḥānaسبحانسُبْحَٰنَ"Glory berabbināربنارَبِّنَآ(to) our Lord!innāإناإِنَّاIndeed, wekunnāكناكُنَّا[we] wereẓālimīnaظالمينظَٰلِمِينَwrongdoers."They said: Glorified be our Lord! Lo! we have been wrong-doers.They said, “Glory be to our Lord! We were truly wrongdoers.”They said, "Exalted is our Lord! Indeed, we were wrongdoers."They said: "Glory to our Lord! Verily we have been doing wrong!" |
| 30 | فَأَقْبَلَ بَعْضُهُمْ عَلَىٰ بَعْضٖ يَتَلَٰوَمُونَfa-aqbalaفأقبلفَأَقْبَلَThen approached,baʿḍuhumبعضهمبَعْضُهُمْsome of themʿalāعلىعَلَىٰtobaʿḍinبعضبَعْضٍothersyatalāwamūnaيتلاومونيَتَلَٰوَمُونَblaming each other.Then some of them drew near unto others, self-reproaching.Then they turned to one another, throwing blame.Then they approached one another, blaming each other.Then they turned, one against another, in reproach. |
| 31 | قَالُواْ يَٰوَيْلَنَآ إِنَّا كُنَّا طَٰغِينَqālūقالواقَالُواْThey said,yāwaylanāيا ويلنايَٰوَيْلَنَآ"O woe to us!innāإناإِنَّاIndeed, wekunnāكناكُنَّا[we] wereṭāghīnaطاغينطَٰغِينَtransgressors.They said: Alas for us! In truth we were outrageous.They said, “Woe to us! We were surely transgressors.They said, "O woe to us; indeed we were transgressors.They said: "Alas for us! We have indeed transgressed! |
| 32 | عَسَىٰ رَبُّنَآ أَن يُبْدِلَنَا خَيْرٗا مِّنْهَآ إِنَّآ إِلَىٰ رَبِّنَا رَٰغِبُونَʿasāعسىعَسَىٰPerhaps,rabbunāربنارَبُّنَآour Lord,anأنأَن[that]yub'dilanāيبدلنايُبْدِلَنَاwill substitute for uskhayranخيراخَيْرًاa bettermin'hāمنهامِّنْهَآthan it.innāإناإِنَّآIndeed, weilāإلىإِلَىٰtorabbināربنارَبِّنَاour Lordrāghibūnaراغبونرَٰغِبُونَturn devoutly."It may be that our Lord will give us better than this in place thereof. Lo! we beseech our Lord.Our Lord may give us something better than this. We certainly turn to our Lord in hope[7].”Perhaps our Lord will substitute for us [one] better than it. Indeed, we are toward our Lord desirous."[1730]"It may be that our Lord will give us in exchange a better (garden) than this: for we do turn to Him (in repentance)!" |
| 33 | كَذَٰلِكَ ٱلْعَذَابُۖ وَلَعَذَابُ ٱلْأٓخِرَةِ أَكْبَرُۚ لَوْ كَانُواْ يَعْلَمُونَkadhālikaكذلككَذَٰلِكَSuchl-ʿadhābuالعذابٱلْعَذَابُ(is) the punishment.walaʿadhābuولعذابوَلَعَذَابُAnd surely the punishmentl-ākhiratiالآخرةٱلْءَاخِرَةِ(of) the Hereafterakbaruأكبرأَكْبَرُ(is) greater,lawلولَوْifkānūكانواكَانُواْtheyyaʿlamūnaيعلمونيَعْلَمُونَknow.Such was the punishment. And verily the punishment of the Hereafter is greater if they did but know.Such is the punishment [in this world]; but the punishment of the Hereafter is far worse, if only they knew.Such is the punishment [of this world]. And the punishment of the Hereafter is greater, if they only knew.Such is the Punishment (in this life); but greater is the Punishment in the Hereafter,- if only they knew! |
| 34 | إِنَّ لِلْمُتَّقِينَ عِندَ رَبِّهِمْ جَنَّٰتِ ٱلنَّعِيمِinnaإنإِنَّIndeed,lil'muttaqīnaللمتقينلِلْمُتَّقِينَfor the righteousʿindaعندعِندَwithrabbihimربهمرَبِّهِمْtheir Lordjannātiجناتجَنَّٰتِ(are) Gardensl-naʿīmiالنعيمٱلنَّعِيمِ(of) Delight.Lo! for those who keep from evil are gardens of bliss with their Lord.Indeed, the righteous will have gardens of bliss with their Lord.Indeed, for the righteous with their Lord are the Gardens of Pleasure.Verily, for the Righteous, are Gardens of Delight, in the Presence of their Lord. |
| 35 | أَفَنَجْعَلُ ٱلْمُسْلِمِينَ كَٱلْمُجْرِمِينَafanajʿaluأفنجعلأَفَنَجْعَلُThen will We treatl-mus'limīnaالمسلمينٱلْمُسْلِمِينَthe Muslimskal-muj'rimīnaكالمجرمينكَٱلْمُجْرِمِينَlike the criminals?Shall We then treat those who have surrendered as We treat the guilty?Should We then treat Muslims like the wicked?Then will We treat the Muslims like the criminals?Shall We then treat the People of Faith like the People of Sin? |
| 36 | مَا لَكُمْ كَيْفَ تَحْكُمُونَmāمامَاWhatlakumلكملَكُمْ(is) for you?kayfaكيفكَيْفَHowtaḥkumūnaتحكمونتَحْكُمُونَ(do) you judge?What aileth you? How foolishly ye judge!What is the matter with you that you make such a judgment?What is [the matter] with you? How do you judge?What is the matter with you? How judge ye? |
| 37 | أَمْ لَكُمْ كِتَٰبَ فِيهِ تَدْرُسُونَamأمأَمْOrlakumلكملَكُمْ(is) for youkitābunكتابكِتَٰبٌa bookfīhiفيهفِيهِwhereintadrusūnaتدرسونتَدْرُسُونَyou learn,Or have ye a scripture wherein ye learnOr do you have a scripture in which you readOr do you have a scripture in which you learnOr have ye a book through which ye learn- |
| 38 | إِنَّ لَكُمْ فِيهِ لَمَا تَخَيَّرُونَinnaإنإِنَّIndeedlakumلكملَكُمْfor youfīhiفيهفِيهِin itlamāلمالَمَاwhattakhayyarūnaتخيرونتَخَيَّرُونَyou choose?That ye shall indeed have all that ye choose?that you will be given whatever you choose?That indeed for you is whatever you choose?That ye shall have, through it whatever ye choose? |
| 39 | أَمْ لَكُمْ أَيْمَٰنٌ عَلَيْنَا بَٰلِغَةٌ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ ٱلْقِيَٰمَةِ إِنَّ لَكُمْ لَمَا تَحْكُمُونَamأمأَمْOrlakumلكملَكُمْfor youaymānunأيمانأَيْمَٰنٌoathsʿalaynāعليناعَلَيْنَاfrom us,bālighatunبالغةبَٰلِغَةٌreachingilāإلىإِلَىٰtoyawmiيوميَوْمِ(the) Dayl-qiyāmatiالقيامةٱلْقِيَٰمَةِ(of) the Resurrection,innaإنإِنَّindeed,lakumلكملَكُمْfor youlamāلمالَمَا(is) whattaḥkumūnaتحكمونتَحْكُمُونَyou judge?Or have ye a covenant on oath from Us that reacheth to the Day of Judgment, that yours shall be all that ye ordain?Or do you have a solemn promise binding upon Us until the Day of Resurrection, that you will have whatever you decide for yourselves?Or do you have oaths [binding] upon Us, extending until the Day of Resurrection, that indeed for you is whatever you judge?Or have ye Covenants with Us to oath, reaching to the Day of Judgment, (providing) that ye shall have whatever ye shall demand? |
| 40 | سَلْهُمْ أَيُّهُم بِذَٰلِكَ زَعِيمٌsalhumسلهمسَلْهُمْAsk them,ayyuhumأيهمأَيُّهُمwhich of thembidhālikaبذلكبِذَٰلِكَfor thatzaʿīmunزعيمزَعِيمٌ(is) responsible.Ask them (O Muhammad) which of them will vouch for that!Ask them which of them can guarantee that.Ask them which of them, for that [claim], is responsible.Ask thou of them, which of them will stand surety for that! |
| 41 | أَمْ لَهُمْ شُرَكَآءُ فَلْيَأْتُواْ بِشُرَكَآئِهِمْ إِن كَانُواْ صَٰدِقِينَamأمأَمْOrlahumلهملَهُمْ(are) for themshurakāuشركاءشُرَكَآءُpartners?falyatūفليأتوافَلْيَأْتُواْThen let them bringbishurakāihimبشركائهمبِشُرَكَآئِهِمْtheir partners,inإنإِنifkānūكانواكَانُواْthey areṣādiqīnaصادقينصَٰدِقِينَtruthful.Or have they other gods? Then let them bring their other gods if they are truthfulOr do they have associate-gods? Then let them bring forth their associate-gods[8], if they are truthful.Or do they have partners?[1731] Then let them bring their partners, if they should be truthful.Or have they some "Partners" (in Allahhead)? Then let them produce their "partners", if they are truthful! |
| 42 | يَوْمَ يُكْشَفُ عَن سَاقٖ وَيُدْعَوْنَ إِلَى ٱلسُّجُودِ فَلَا يَسْتَطِيعُونَyawmaيوميَوْمَ(The) Dayyuk'shafuيكشفيُكْشَفُwill be uncoveredʿanعنعَنfromsāqinساقسَاقٍthe shinwayud'ʿawnaويدعونوَيُدْعَوْنَand they will be calledilāإلىإِلَىtol-sujūdiالسجودٱلسُّجُودِprostrate,falāفلافَلَاbut notyastaṭīʿūnaيستطيعونيَسْتَطِيعُونَthey will be able,On the day when it befalleth in earnest, and they are ordered to prostrate themselves but are not able,On the Day when the Shin [of Allah] will be uncovered[9], and they are invited to prostrate, but they will not be able to do so.The Day the shin will be uncovered[1732] and they are invited to prostration but they [i.e., the disbelievers] will not be able,The Day that the shin shall be laid bare, and they shall be summoned to bow in adoration, but they shall not be able,- |
| 43 | خَٰشِعَةً أَبْصَٰرُهُمْ تَرْهَقُهُمْ ذِلَّةَۖ وَقَدْ كَانُواْ يُدْعَوْنَ إِلَى ٱلسُّجُودِ وَهُمْ سَٰلِمُونَkhāshiʿatanخاشعةخَٰشِعَةًHumbled,abṣāruhumأبصارهمأَبْصَٰرُهُمْtheir eyes,tarhaquhumترهقهمتَرْهَقُهُمْwill cover themdhillatunذلةذِلَّةٌhumiliation.waqadوقدوَقَدْAnd indeed,kānūكانواكَانُواْthey wereyud'ʿawnaيدعونيُدْعَوْنَcalledilāإلىإِلَىtol-sujūdiالسجودٱلسُّجُودِprostratewahumوهموَهُمْwhile theysālimūnaسالمونسَٰلِمُونَ(were) sound.With eyes downcast, abasement stupefying them. And they had been summoned to prostrate themselves while they were yet unhurt.Their eyes will be downcast, overwhelmed with humiliation, for they were invited to prostrate when they were capable[10] [but they refused].Their eyes humbled, humiliation will cover them. And they used to be invited to prostration while they were sound.[1733]Their eyes will be cast down,- ignominy will cover them; seeing that they had been summoned aforetime to bow in adoration, while they were whole, (and had refused). |
| 44 | فَذَرْنِي وَمَن يُكَذِّبُ بِهَٰذَا ٱلْحَدِيثِۖ سَنَسْتَدْرِجُهُم مِّنْ حَيْثُ لَا يَعْلَمُونَfadharnīفذرنيفَذَرْنِىSo leave Mewamanومنوَمَنand whoeveryukadhibuيكذبيُكَذِّبُdeniesbihādhāبهذابِهَٰذَاthisl-ḥadīthiالحديثٱلْحَدِيثِStatement,sanastadrijuhumسنستدرجهمسَنَسْتَدْرِجُهُمWe will progressively lead themminمنمِّنْfromḥaythuحيثحَيْثُwherelāلالَاnotyaʿlamūnaيعلمونيَعْلَمُونَthey know.Leave Me (to deal) with those who give the lie to this pronouncement. We shall lead them on by steps from whence they know not.So leave to Me those who reject this message [O Prophet]. We will gradually lead them to their ruin in ways that they do not perceive[11].So leave Me, [O Muḥammad], with [the matter of] whoever denies this statement [i.e., the Qur’ān]. We will progressively lead them [to punishment] from where they do not know.[1734]Then leave Me alone with such as reject this Message: by degrees shall We punish them from directions they perceive not. |
| 45 | وَأُمْلِي لَهُمْۚ إِنَّ كَيْدِي مَتِينٌwa-um'līوأمليوَأُمْلِىAnd I will give respitelahumلهملَهُمْto them.innaإنإِنَّIndeed,kaydīكيديكَيْدِىMy planmatīnunمتينمَتِينٌ(is) firm.Yet I bear with them, for lo! My scheme is firm.I will give them respite, but My plan is firm.And I will give them time. Indeed, My plan is firm.A (long) respite will I grant them: truly powerful is My Plan. |
| 46 | أَمْ تَسْـَٔلُهُمْ أَجْرٗا فَهُم مِّن مَّغْرَمٖ مُّثْقَلُونَamأمأَمْOrtasaluhumتسألهمتَسْـَٔلُهُمْyou ask themajranأجراأَجْرًاa payment,fahumفهمفَهُمso theyminمنمِّنfrommaghraminمغرممَّغْرَمٍ(the) debtmuth'qalūnaمثقلونمُّثْقَلُونَ(are) burdened?Or dost thou (Muhammad) ask a fee from them so that they are heavily taxed?Or are you asking them for a reward, so they find it too burdensome?Or do you ask of them a payment, so they are by debt burdened down?Or is it that thou dost ask them for a reward, so that they are burdened with a load of debt?- |
| 47 | أَمْ عِندَهُمُ ٱلْغَيْبُ فَهُمْ يَكْتُبُونَamأمأَمْOrʿindahumuعندهمعِندَهُمُ(is) with theml-ghaybuالغيبٱلْغَيْبُthe unseen,fahumفهمفَهُمْso theyyaktubūnaيكتبونيَكْتُبُونَwrite it?Or is the Unseen theirs that they can write (thereof)?Or do they have knowledge of the unseen, so they write it down?Or have they [knowledge of] the unseen, so they write [it] down?Or that the Unseen is in their hands, so that they can write it down? |
| 48 | فَٱصْبِرْ لِحُكْمِ رَبِّكَ وَلَا تَكُن كَصَاحِبِ ٱلْحُوتِ إِذْ نَادَىٰ وَهُوَ مَكْظُومَfa-iṣ'birفاصبرفَٱصْبِرْSo be patientliḥuk'miلحكملِحُكْمِfor (the) decisionrabbikaربكرَبِّكَ(of) your Lord,walāولاوَلَاand (do) nottakunتكنتَكُنbekaṣāḥibiكصاحبكَصَاحِبِlike (the) companionl-ḥūtiالحوتٱلْحُوتِ(of) the fish,idhإذإِذْwhennādāنادىنَادَىٰhe called out,wahuwaوهووَهُوَwhile hemakẓūmunمكظوممَكْظُومٌ(was) distressed.But wait thou for thy Lord's decree, and be not like him of the fish, who cried out in despair.So be patient with the decree of your Lord, and do not be like the man of the Whale [i.e., Jonah], when he cried out in anguish[12].Then be patient for the decision of your Lord, [O Muḥammad], and be not like the companion of the fish [i.e., Jonah] when he called out while he was distressed.So wait with patience for the Command of thy Lord, and be not like the Companion of the Fish,- when he cried out in agony. |
| 49 | لَّوْلَآ أَن تَدَٰرَكَهُ نِعْمَةَ مِّن رَّبِّهِۦ لَنُبِذَ بِٱلْعَرَآءِ وَهُوَ مَذْمُومَlawlāلولالَّوْلَآIf notanأنأَنthattadārakahuتداركهتَدَٰرَكَهُovertook himniʿ'matunنعمةنِعْمَةٌa Favorminمنمِّنfromrabbihiربهرَّبِّهِۦhis Lord,lanubidhaلنبذلَنُبِذَsurely he would have been thrownbil-ʿarāiبالعراءبِٱلْعَرَآءِonto (the) naked shorewahuwaوهووَهُوَwhile hemadhmūmunمذموممَذْمُومٌ(was) blamed.Had it not been that favour from his Lord had reached him he surely had been cast into the wilderness while he was reprobate.Had it not been for the grace that he received from his Lord, he would have surely been thrown onto the barren shore, blameworthy[13].If not that a favor [i.e., mercy] from his Lord overtook him, he would have been thrown onto the naked shore while he was censured.[1735]Had not Grace from his Lord reached him, he would indeed have been cast off on the naked shore, in disgrace. |
| 50 | فَٱجْتَبَٰهُ رَبُّهُ فَجَعَلَهُ مِنَ ٱلصَّٰلِحِينَfa-ij'tabāhuفاجتباهفَٱجْتَبَٰهُBut chose him,rabbuhuربهرَبُّهُhis Lord,fajaʿalahuفجعلهفَجَعَلَهُand made himminaمنمِنَofl-ṣāliḥīnaالصالحينٱلصَّٰلِحِينَthe righteous.But his Lord chose him and placed him among the righteous.But his Lord chose him and made him one of the righteous.And his Lord chose him and made him of the righteous.Thus did his Lord choose him and make him of the Company of the Righteous. |
| 51 | وَإِن يَكَادُ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ لَيُزْلِقُونَكَ بِأَبْصَٰرِهِمْ لَمَّا سَمِعُواْ ٱلذِّكْرَ وَيَقُولُونَ إِنَّهُ لَمَجْنُونَwa-inوإنوَإِنAnd indeed,yakāduيكاديَكَادُwould almostalladhīnaالذينٱلَّذِينَthose whokafarūكفرواكَفَرُواْdisbelieve,layuz'liqūnakaليزلقونكلَيُزْلِقُونَكَsurely make you slipbi-abṣārihimبأبصارهمبِأَبْصَٰرِهِمْwith their looklammāلمالَمَّاwhensamiʿūسمعواسَمِعُواْthey hearl-dhik'raالذكرٱلذِّكْرَthe Message,wayaqūlūnaويقولونوَيَقُولُونَand they say,innahuإنهإِنَّهُ"Indeed, helamajnūnunلمجنونلَمَجْنُونٌ(is) surely mad."And lo! those who disbelieve would fain disconcert thee with their eyes when they hear the Reminder, and they say: Lo! he is indeed mad;The disbelievers would almost strike you down with their malicious gazes when they hear the Reminder, and they say, “He is certainly mad.”And indeed, those who disbelieve would almost make you slip with their eyes [i.e., looks] when they hear the message, and they say, "Indeed, he is mad."And the Unbelievers would almost trip thee up with their eyes when they hear the Message; and they say: "Surely he is possessed!" |
| 52 | وَمَا هُوَ إِلَّا ذِكْرَ لِّلْعَٰلَمِينَwamāوماوَمَاAnd nothuwaهوهُوَit (is)illāإلاإِلَّاbutdhik'runذكرذِكْرٌa Reminderlil'ʿālamīnaللعالمينلِّلْعَٰلَمِينَto the worlds.When it is naught else than a Reminder to creation.But it is nothing other than a reminder to the whole world.But it is not except a reminder to the worlds.But it is nothing less than a Message to all the worlds. |

ﲺ ﲻ ﲼ ﲽ ﲾ ﲿ ﳀ ﳁ ﳂ ﳃ ﳄ ﳅ ﳆ ﳇ
ﳈ ﳉ ﳊ ﳋ ﳌ ﳍ ﳎ ﳏ ﳐ
ﱁ ﱂ ﱃ ﱄ ﱅ ﱆ ﱇ ﱈ ﱉ ﱊ ﱋ ﱌ
ﱍ ﱎ ﱏ ﱐ ﱑ ﱒ ﱓ ﱔ ﱕ ﱖ ﱗ
ﱘ ﱙ ﱚ ﱛ ﱜ ﱝ ﱞ ﱟ ﱠ ﱡ ﱢ
ﱣ ﱤ ﱥ ﱦ ﱧ ﱨ ﱩ ﱪ ﱫ ﱬ ﱭ
ﱮ ﱯ ﱰ ﱱ ﱲ ﱳ ﱴ ﱵ ﱶ ﱷ ﱸ ﱹ

ﳨ ﳩ ﳪ ﳫ ﳬ ﳭ ﳮ ﳯ ﳰ
ﱁ ﱂ ﱃ ﱄﱅ ﱆ ﱇ ﱈ ﱉ ﱊ ﱋ
ﱌ ﱍ ﱎ ﱏ ﱐ ﱑ ﱒﱓ ﱔ
ﱕ ﱖ ﱗ ﱘ ﱙ ﱚ ﱛﱜ ﱝ ﱞ ﱟ ﱠ ﱡ ﱢ
ﱣ ﱤ ﱥ ﱦ ﱧ ﱨ ﱩ ﱪ ﱫ ﱬ ﱭ
ﱮ ﱯ ﱰ ﱱ ﱲ ﱳ ﱴ ﱵ ﱶ ﱷ
ﱸ ﱹ ﱺ ﱻ ﱼ ﱽ ﱾ ﱿ ﲀ ﲁ ﲂ
ﲃ ﲄ ﲅ ﲆ ﲇ ﲈ ﲉ ﲊ
ﲋ ﲌ ﲍ ﲎ ﲏ ﲐ ﲑ ﲒ ﲓ
ﲔ ﲕ ﲖ ﲗ ﲘ ﲙ ﲚ ﲛ ﲜ ﲝ ﲞ
ن وَالْقَلَمِ وَمَا يَسْطُرُونَ ١ مَا أَنتَ بِنِعْمَةِ رَبِّكَ بِمَجْنُونٍ ٢ وَإِنَّ
لَكَ لَأَجْرًا غَيْرَ مَمْنُونٍ ٣ وَإِنَّكَ لَعَلَىٰ خُلُقٍ عَظِيمٍ ٤ فَسَتُبْصِرُ
وَيُبْصِرُونَ ٥ بِأَييِّكُمُ الْمَفْتُونُ ٦ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَن ضَلَّ
عَن سَبِيلِهِ وَهُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِالْمُهْتَدِينَ ٧ فَلَا تُطِعِ الْمُكَذِّبِينَ
٨ وَدُّوا لَوْ تُدْهِنُ فَيُدْهِنُونَ ٩ وَلَا تُطِعْ كُلَّ حَلَّافٍ مَّهِينٍ
١٠ هَمَّازٍ مَّشَّاءٍ بِنَمِيمٍ ١١ مَّنَّاعٍ لِّلْخَيْرِ مُعْتَدٍ أَثِيمٍ ١٢
عُتُلٍّ بَعْدَ ذَٰلِكَ زَنِيمٍ ١٣ أَن كَانَ ذَا مَالٍ وَبَنِينَ ١٤ إِذَا تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِ
آيَاتُنَا قَالَ أَسَاطِيرُ الْأَوَّلِينَ ١٥ سَنَسِمُهُ عَلَى الْخُرْطُومِ ١٦
إِنَّا بَلَوْنَاهُمْ كَمَا بَلَوْنَا أَصْحَابَ الْجَنَّةِ إِذْ أَقْسَمُوا لَيَصْرِمُنَّهَا مُصْبِحِينَ ١٧ وَلَا
يَسْتَثْنُونَ ١٨ فَطَافَ عَلَيْهَا طَائِفٌ مِّن رَّبِّكَ وَهُمْ نَائِمُونَ ١٩ فَأَصْبَحَتْ
كَالصَّرِيمِ ٢٠ فَتَنَادَوْا مُصْبِحِينَ ٢١ أَنِ اغْدُوا عَلَىٰ حَرْثِكُمْ إِن كُنتُمْ
صَارِمِينَ ٢٢ فَانطَلَقُوا وَهُمْ يَتَخَافَتُونَ ٢٣ أَن لَّا يَدْخُلَنَّهَا الْيَوْمَ عَلَيْكُم
مِّسْكِينٌ ٢٤ وَغَدَوْا عَلَىٰ حَرْدٍ قَادِرِينَ ٢٥ فَلَمَّا رَأَوْهَا قَالُوا إِنَّا لَضَالُّونَ
٢٦ بَلْ نَحْنُ مَحْرُومُونَ ٢٧ قَالَ أَوْسَطُهُمْ أَلَمْ أَقُل لَّكُمْ لَوْلَا تُسَبِّحُونَ
٢٨ قَالُوا سُبْحَانَ رَبِّنَا إِنَّا كُنَّا ظَالِمِينَ ٢٩ فَأَقْبَلَ بَعْضُهُمْ عَلَىٰ بَعْضٍ
يَتَلَاوَمُونَ ٣٠ قَالُوا يَا وَيْلَنَا إِنَّا كُنَّا طَاغِينَ ٣١ عَسَىٰ رَبُّنَا أَن يُبْدِلَنَا
خَيْرًا مِّنْهَا إِنَّا إِلَىٰ رَبِّنَا رَاغِبُونَ ٣٢ كَذَٰلِكَ الْعَذَابُ وَلَعَذَابُ الْآخِرَةِ
أَكْبَرُ لَوْ كَانُوا يَعْلَمُونَ ٣٣ إِنَّ لِلْمُتَّقِينَ عِندَ رَبِّهِمْ جَنَّاتِ النَّعِيمِ ٣٤
أَفَنَجْعَلُ الْمُسْلِمِينَ كَالْمُجْرِمِينَ ٣٥ مَا لَكُمْ كَيْفَ تَحْكُمُونَ ٣٦ أَمْ لَكُمْ
كِتَابٌ فِيهِ تَدْرُسُونَ ٣٧ إِنَّ لَكُمْ فِيهِ لَمَا تَخَيَّرُونَ ٣٨ أَمْ لَكُمْ أَيْمَانٌ عَلَيْنَا
بَالِغَةٌ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ إِنَّ لَكُمْ لَمَا تَحْكُمُونَ ٣٩ سَلْهُمْ أَيُّهُم بِذَٰلِكَ
زَعِيمٌ ٤٠ أَمْ لَهُمْ شُرَكَاءُ فَلْيَأْتُوا بِشُرَكَائِهِمْ إِن كَانُوا صَادِقِينَ ٤١ يَوْمَ
يُكْشَفُ عَن سَاقٍ وَيُدْعَوْنَ إِلَى السُّجُودِ فَلَا يَسْتَطِيعُونَ ٤٢
خَاشِعَةً أَبْصَارُهُمْ تَرْهَقُهُمْ ذِلَّةٌ وَقَدْ كَانُوا يُدْعَوْنَ إِلَى السُّجُودِ وَهُمْ
سَالِمُونَ ٤٣ فَذَرْنِي وَمَن يُكَذِّبُ بِهَٰذَا الْحَدِيثِ سَنَسْتَدْرِجُهُم
مِّنْ حَيْثُ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ ٤٤ وَأُمْلِي لَهُمْ إِنَّ كَيْدِي مَتِينٌ ٤٥ أَمْ تَسْأَلُهُمْ
أَجْرًا فَهُم مِّن مَّغْرَمٍ مُّثْقَلُونَ ٤٦ أَمْ عِندَهُمُ الْغَيْبُ فَهُمْ يَكْتُبُونَ
٤٧ فَاصْبِرْ لِحُكْمِ رَبِّكَ وَلَا تَكُن كَصَاحِبِ الْحُوتِ إِذْ نَادَىٰ
وَهُوَ مَكْظُومٌ ٤٨ لَّوْلَا أَن تَدَارَكَهُ نِعْمَةٌ مِّن رَّبِّهِ لَنُبِذَ بِالْعَرَاءِ
وَهُوَ مَذْمُومٌ ٤٩ فَاجْتَبَاهُ رَبُّهُ فَجَعَلَهُ مِنَ الصَّالِحِينَ
٥٠ وَإِن يَكَادُ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا لَيُزْلِقُونَكَ بِأَبْصَارِهِمْ لَمَّا سَمِعُوا
الذِّكْرَ وَيَقُولُونَ إِنَّهُ لَمَجْنُونٌ ٥١ وَمَا هُوَ إِلَّا ذِكْرٌ لِّلْعَالَمِينَ ٥٢
نٓۚ وَٱلْقَلَمِ وَمَا يَسْطُرُونَ ١ مَآ أَنتَ بِنِعْمَةِ رَبِّكَ بِمَجْنُونٖ ٢ وَإِنَّ

١٠ هَمَّازٖ مَّشَّآءِۭ بِنَمِيمٖ ١١ مَّنَّاعٖ لِّلْخَيْرِ مُعْتَدٍ أَثِيمٍ ١٢
عُتُلِّۭ بَعْدَ ذَٰلِكَ زَنِيمٍ ١٣ أَن كَانَ ذَا مَالٖ وَبَنِينَ ١٤ إِذَا تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِ
ءَايَٰتُنَا قَالَ أَسَٰطِيرُ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ ١٥ سَنَسِمُهُ عَلَى ٱلْخُرْطُومِ ١٦
إِنَّا بَلَوْنَٰهُمْ كَمَا بَلَوْنَآ أَصْحَٰبَ ٱلْجَنَّةِ إِذْ أَقْسَمُواْ لَيَصْرِمُنَّهَا مُصْبِحِينَ ١٧ وَلَا
يَسْتَثْنُونَ ١٨ فَطَافَ عَلَيْهَا طَآئِفَ مِّن رَّبِّكَ وَهُمْ نَآئِمُونَ ١٩ فَأَصْبَحَتْ
كَٱلصَّرِيمِ ٢٠ فَتَنَادَوْاْ مُصْبِحِينَ ٢١ أَنِ ٱغْدُواْ عَلَىٰ حَرْثِكُمْ إِن كُنتُمْ
صَٰرِمِينَ ٢٢ فَٱنطَلَقُواْ وَهُمْ يَتَخَٰفَتُونَ ٢٣ أَن لَّا يَدْخُلَنَّهَا ٱلْيَوْمَ عَلَيْكُم
مِّسْكِينَ ٢٤ وَغَدَوْاْ عَلَىٰ حَرْدٖ قَٰدِرِينَ ٢٥ فَلَمَّا رَأَوْهَا قَالُوٓاْ إِنَّا لَضَآلُّونَ
٢٦ بَلْ نَحْنُ مَحْرُومُونَ ٢٧ قَالَ أَوْسَطُهُمْ أَلَمْ أَقُل لَّكُمْ لَوْلَا تُسَبِّحُونَ
٢٨ قَالُواْ سُبْحَٰنَ رَبِّنَآ إِنَّا كُنَّا ظَٰلِمِينَ ٢٩ فَأَقْبَلَ بَعْضُهُمْ عَلَىٰ بَعْضٖ
يَتَلَٰوَمُونَ ٣٠ قَالُواْ يَٰوَيْلَنَآ إِنَّا كُنَّا طَٰغِينَ ٣١ عَسَىٰ رَبُّنَآ أَن يُبْدِلَنَا
خَيْرٗا مِّنْهَآ إِنَّآ إِلَىٰ رَبِّنَا رَٰغِبُونَ ٣٢ كَذَٰلِكَ ٱلْعَذَابُۖ وَلَعَذَابُ ٱلْأٓخِرَةِ
أَكْبَرُۚ لَوْ كَانُواْ يَعْلَمُونَ ٣٣ إِنَّ لِلْمُتَّقِينَ عِندَ رَبِّهِمْ جَنَّٰتِ ٱلنَّعِيمِ ٣٤
أَفَنَجْعَلُ ٱلْمُسْلِمِينَ كَٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ ٣٥ مَا لَكُمْ كَيْفَ تَحْكُمُونَ ٣٦ أَمْ لَكُمْ
كِتَٰبَ فِيهِ تَدْرُسُونَ ٣٧ إِنَّ لَكُمْ فِيهِ لَمَا تَخَيَّرُونَ ٣٨ أَمْ لَكُمْ أَيْمَٰنٌ عَلَيْنَا
بَٰلِغَةٌ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ ٱلْقِيَٰمَةِ إِنَّ لَكُمْ لَمَا تَحْكُمُونَ ٣٩ سَلْهُمْ أَيُّهُم بِذَٰلِكَ
زَعِيمٌ ٤٠ أَمْ لَهُمْ شُرَكَآءُ فَلْيَأْتُواْ بِشُرَكَآئِهِمْ إِن كَانُواْ صَٰدِقِينَ ٤١ يَوْمَ
يُكْشَفُ عَن سَاقٖ وَيُدْعَوْنَ إِلَى ٱلسُّجُودِ فَلَا يَسْتَطِيعُونَ ٤٢
خَٰشِعَةً أَبْصَٰرُهُمْ تَرْهَقُهُمْ ذِلَّةَۖ وَقَدْ كَانُواْ يُدْعَوْنَ إِلَى ٱلسُّجُودِ وَهُمْ
سَٰلِمُونَ ٤٣ فَذَرْنِي وَمَن يُكَذِّبُ بِهَٰذَا ٱلْحَدِيثِۖ سَنَسْتَدْرِجُهُم
مِّنْ حَيْثُ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ ٤٤ وَأُمْلِي لَهُمْۚ إِنَّ كَيْدِي مَتِينٌ ٤٥ أَمْ تَسْـَٔلُهُمْ
أَجْرٗا فَهُم مِّن مَّغْرَمٖ مُّثْقَلُونَ ٤٦ أَمْ عِندَهُمُ ٱلْغَيْبُ فَهُمْ يَكْتُبُونَ
٤٧ فَٱصْبِرْ لِحُكْمِ رَبِّكَ وَلَا تَكُن كَصَاحِبِ ٱلْحُوتِ إِذْ نَادَىٰ
وَهُوَ مَكْظُومَ ٤٨ لَّوْلَآ أَن تَدَٰرَكَهُ نِعْمَةَ مِّن رَّبِّهِۦ لَنُبِذَ بِٱلْعَرَآءِ
وَهُوَ مَذْمُومَ ٤٩ فَٱجْتَبَٰهُ رَبُّهُ فَجَعَلَهُ مِنَ ٱلصَّٰلِحِينَ
٥٠ وَإِن يَكَادُ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ لَيُزْلِقُونَكَ بِأَبْصَٰرِهِمْ لَمَّا سَمِعُواْ
ٱلذِّكْرَ وَيَقُولُونَ إِنَّهُ لَمَجْنُونَ ٥١ وَمَا هُوَ إِلَّا ذِكْرَ لِّلْعَٰلَمِينَ ٥٢
ﱹﱺ ﱻ ﱼ ﱽ ﱾ ﱿ ﲀ ﲁ ﲂ ﲃ ﲄ ﲅ
ﲆ ﲇ ﲈ ﲉ ﲊ ﲋ ﲌ ﲍ ﲎ ﲏ ﲐ
ﲑ ﲒ ﲓ ﲔ ﲕ ﲖ ﲗ ﲘ ﲙ ﲚ ﲛ
ﲜ ﲝ ﲞ ﲟ ﲠ ﲡ ﲢ ﲣ ﲤ ﲥ
ﲦ ﲧ ﲨ ﲩ ﲪ ﲫ ﲬ ﲭ ﲮ ﲯ ﲰ
